Edit : after having read Monolith's post :

Windows media sucks. It is by far the worst player I've ever had on my windows. Winamp is way better for sound, and Sasami offers much more viewing comfort than the pathetic WMP.

Besides, I haven't seen MS at the peak of compression technology...

Once again, MS will use its sharky attack technique in order to impose its subpar products to the world

Not to threadjack, but the whole Palladium scare is BS.

1) It ships disabled
2) Palladium actually allows secure, private P2P networks.

Windows Media != Windows Media Player

Windows Media is the encoders, decoders, and codecs in general. Windows Media powers DirectShow and DirectSound, which Winamp and just about all other MP3/WMA players on Windows use to output sound, and DirectShow is used almost universally for all video on Windows.

Windows Media Formats are things like WMA, WMV, ASF, etc.

Windows Media Player is merely a stock player so all people with Windows are capable of watching Windows Media movies or hearing Windows Media audio. It's simply a DirectShow frontend.

WMP on Windows is also way better than QuickTime on Windows.

Especially with a minimalistic Winamp-esque type skin on WMP.

I'm using Sasami2k, and it is way better than your players, lamers !

I hate how Winamp's video rendering is done. The progression bar on the side rather than inside the window (but hidden) makes it vastly inferior to Sasami IMHO. But Winamp rocks when it comes to music

Sasami has everything I dream of, i.e a perfect interface : the progression bar is hidden within the window until the mouse pointer gets on the zone it normally occupies, and it disappears immediately again once the mouse pointer has moved elsewhere.
The key shortcuts are great, especially the ones which allow to go 5 seconds forwards or backwards (simply left and right keys).

The really big problem is the lack of stability : I often have to try a few times before the video launches. Fortunately, I have never seen it crash while reading a non-corrupt video, it only crashes at the launch.

Huh?
My "progression" bar is always on the bottom center when fullscreen, and only appears when the mouse is active by default. On the player, it's the same spot it is for music...

quicktime and realplayer both suck. i only have them for their codecs, and i destroyed all associations they had with any file outside of their proprietary sh|t.

windows media is better than both of them, but for viewing most everything else, i ususally go with core media player, bsplayer, or divx player.

The Best Media Player ever

capable of playing windows media, mpeg, div-x, real, quicktime and anything you have installed on your system.

no longer suffer from bulky ugly bmp filled front ends.

the one player to beat them all, at just about 600K with tons of options:

Media Player Classic

Doesn't each player/etc. have its own codecs, decoders, and so forth? That's where the real difference is, afterall.

No, codecs are registered with DirectShow/DirectSound.

That's why Winamp can play all WM9 files without giving winamp any codecs.

Since 99% of media applications are just DirectShow frontends, it makes sense that DirectShow manage the codecs rather than the applications themselves.

Players can have their own decoder, but they don't need one.

It's got alot less features than the pc version - it doesn't do anything other than movies... that's fine with us macheads though - we've got itunes for that.

seriously, i don't like the idea of an all-in-one media player.

i use winamp and sonique for audio files. winamp2--not bloated, slow, and painfully irritating winamp3.

Put an end to popups!

DivX Player 2.1 is the ass kicker with ATI Catalyst 3.4 drivers as those include a special video acceleration support for it, plus the program is light and works nicely. WMP and Winamp are bad for videos, in comparison to DivX Player 2.1.
