Well, if you feel that way, why should Atari cater to you if you are going to pirate their stuff anyways?

Seriously, Atari has said that in the future they will hold up releasing the US patches till the RotW patches are done.

i think fritti is pirating in response to actions by Atari, and is not going to pirate regardless...

Well they should seriously think about working with their buyers, not against. I have the american version of civ III and want to buy ptw. This has become quit a problem to do since it's seems impossible to get an american version of PtW here. So I politely emailed Ataris support and asked whether the european PtW would work or if they could help me obtain an american version of PtW. Take into account that I'm emailing the support for my licensed and shop bought CivIII. The answer I get is a big -"we don't know and if you try and fail, well, that's your problem."

Compare this with people that are playing PtW, fully patched, illegally while I can't. This since I think that you should support good games and buy the original. This is so not fair!

Tired of ads?

Atari is much more interested by your wallet than by your opinion, alas.

If there are different versions for different continents, it does enter in a profit logic. With different versions, you can make different advertising campaigns at different moments, each time adapted to each country's commercial rythm of the year. Furthermore it slackens (a little bit) piracy.

There must be other reasons, but I do not know them.

As for your suggestion, I agree except for the piracy bit. Other games don't have these problems...maybe C3C would just be translated the text in game? I don't really know how the mechanics work.

They really shouldn't make them incompatible. I know there are minor copy protection issues, but come on, they probably hurt more than they help.

Though it doesn't affect me much... I'm american

The copy protection is useless and only clutters up installation and patches. Whut they need to do is do a worldwide protection system or trash it alltogether--dedicated pirates aren't going to be deterred by anything anyways.

I just wanted to recall that Atari and Infogrames are just the same. Infogrames changed its name because they had (very very) bad financial results, and that they stinked in the Stock Exchange.

And you can always fight the power. Beyond the opportunity you ever own of opening your mouth and telling your mind on an internet forum like Apolyton's, which has become a true lobby (for the opinions of the members (sufficiently numerous) are taken into account by developpers), you always keep the possibility not to buy the products. If a forum like Apolyton adviced to boycott a product, because, for example, publishers didn't give a damn about players' mind, it would certainly hurt...

To my mind, if Apolyton's members together had no power, new newbies wouldn't suscribe all the time.

To clarify: I did buy Civ3, I bought PTW about the day I could get it here, and I don't want to pirate games. It's just that I feel that the pirates have more support - at least the cracker groups can get the patches to run!

Oh and that gets me thinking about an interesting question: if I bought the Euro version, is it wrong for me to pirate the US version? I know that it's probably illegal according to the letter of the law, but I'm talking about the spirit here -- a 'what if it wasnt wrong to do that' question if you will... I'm interested as to what you all feel.

Let it also be known that I will first stop buying Atari products to vote with my wallet, before I'm pirating anything, it's just that I'm very disappointed in them right now and had to vent my frustrations somewhere.

Are you talking about status in relation to me or panag? or skanky?

Fritti
According to the letter of the law and probably the spirit depending upon who you ask, it's illegal. You're paying for a Euro version and then stealing an American version, which is alike to 2 versions. Yes, the patches are this wierd. Just don't be surprised if you're busted, especially now that you published your intent to thousands of people.

Then again, if you're just cracking it so the patches can work, that's not pirating, that's just reverse engineering. Not necessarily so bad, but still illegal.

(Then again I imagine the laws in the Netherlands would be lax on this kind of thing, considering you can walk down the street a little and buy weed from the corner store? )

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

you're different now, Skanky... now we have one line of text and a smiley.

about the patches thing, I think they should quit this "localization" thing and just sell the american version, then we would have patches without problems. the localized versions usually suck, anyway.
