DG MP Diplomacy Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

"Diplomacy is the one area of the game that is very different between SP and MP. Diplomacy is also very different in MP as the game does not impose more than just a few basic rules (e.g., you can not trade a resource you do not have, you can not trade maps without the technology, etc.). Add in a lot of human factors (e.g., team dynamics) and you can see that diplomacy in an DG game can be the one thing that can be very different from one game to the next. That can be good or bad. Although individual teams may develop their own rules for diplomacy there are none for the game unless those rules are made and all teams agree to them. Diplomacy and these announcement threads are contentious in this game. As this is the first team DG game I hope it is something we can all learn from."

From HarryH, in the crazy GS/Vox thread

Words well written. Something to remember, especially given our further lack of familiarity with some of the teams here.

Question, maybe for F-P:

How much diplo shenanigans go on in regular MP games?

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Depends on which kind of MP.

PBEM there's a fair amount of stuff that goes on.

Regular MP is usually more 'let's build lots of units and kill stuff.'

DG diplomacy is much more... intricate, as I'm sure you're aware.

::stares at Trip:: I dunno what MP games you're playing in, but we shore ain't playin' like that thar whar I'm frum.

Alliances are extremely common in multiplayer games that are "Free for all" as this one certainly is - tech trades tend to be more immediate; most folks aren't that trusting of other players for a "give you this now for that later" environment. (I myself was a little surprised that we were on the beneficial end of that. If I have something I've got that the other guy wants, he's not going to enjoy the benefits of what I have until he can deliver something in return. I forget which tech trade it was, but we got one of our two early or something- bah, brainfried from moving and being on someone else's comp halfway in the middle of nowhere, sorry.)

As for the "honor" of MP games, the simple rule is never leave your back open, no matter how cordial relations are - after all, you cannot truly be betrayed unless you trust someone enough to allow that to happen. Formalized treaties in the sense that we have them here are rare; borders, in the very rare cases that they are agreed upon ahead of time, are never "x tiles from capital" - usually more like "that mountain range" or "that river."

Unfortunately, I'm not sure exactly what usefulness any of this has unless you're asking strictly for your own benefit- Diplomacy games are completely off the beaten path as far as multiplayer diplomacy goes.

Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

I think from my small experience with MP but large experience with PBEM is that diplomacy is much more important in PBEM's than in MP. PBEM's usually involve formal arrangements, treaties etc, not as intricate as MP DGs but much more so than free-for-all MPs.

We have had both an MP game and a PBEM amongs our FAM members, trust me, the PBEM was much more "serious" in that regard, sure there was backstabbing and behind the scenes dealing (hmm... I wonder who it was who backstabbed... ) but it was more like ah, who gives a crap... plus alliances shifted in the middle of the war! that's how serious it was

Hell, i'd play, but with my measly 56.6 modem and P500 wars can get pretty slow for me... there are time I have no clue what's going on and who's killing who, I just hear whacks and thuds and then suddenly someone's stack dissappears!

Count me in too!

Togas, WhiteBandit and myself played a scenario that Togas built. It was pretty
fun, we are only a third of the way through it I bet.
