Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Longevity is the bane of big(expensive to run) games companies in a market led industry. Civ games that offer many months of replay value have slowly been taking second place to games that offer a beter ratio of $'s(£'s whatever) per hour of gameing(for the companies that is). I just played the new 'Wolfenstien' game on my Xbox - 3 evenings(about 17 hrs) later i had completed it(and i'm a TBS player!!).
That's the way the main companies will look at it. I'm starting to have a very bleak outlook about what our 'hobby' may be becoming(if it already isn't?)

People learn quick though. Veteran gamers always look for value, and newbies learn this fast. Gaming sites such as Apolyton let gamers share their experiences and vent their gripes.

Just the replay value may be enough for TBS to continue.

Sure, a lot of people maybe would rather play online, a good game, if it could be played that way.

It may not take that much to make a TBS like Civ 3 or Moo 3 to be a sort of continual turn-based game.

In fact, in some instances they did that, by allowing the computer players to 'think' while the human is making the turn. Plenty of time for that.

It may actually depend more on the OS perhaps, maybe not.

But change the code around to move (like Civ3 multiplayer is suppose to be with simultaneous moves and such), and it approaches a real-time game but just a little different.

im not sure longevity isnt considerable for many RTS's though. Age of Empires I played all the campaigns, a scattering scenarios, and several user created campaigns. Ive still got gameplay left (several good user created campaigns i havent played) and I dont play MP, which the aficionados mostly do.

That's true lord of the mark, still it's becoming more of the exception to the rule i feel. It makes sense from the game production side of things especially as the industry is really at the the mercy of the big production companies. The more disasters the industry faces the more tight fisted and unorigonal it becomes, and the more disasters it faces

We may well get the odd new TBS from time to time as the suits try to cash in on all our golden memmories.

Urban Ranger, you are right about places like Apolyton being vital for the end user, i don't buy any new release these days without checking a few forums here and there.
