Going forwards in this game, one of the keys that will insure our long term prospects of succeed or failure is going to be diplomacy.

Also, as pointed out to us by a variety of situations, our diplomacy needs a bit of work. After the past two week, I see that we need to adjust our diplomacy scholia. The secret is contact, contact, and more contact. Ideally we should always be talking (via chat and PM) to the other civilizations. I suggest having a chat a week with each other team, no matter what. Talk about he weather for all it matters, but talk. We should ALWAYS either looking for deals in the future or are cementing a new one. We should go into these chats with the spirit of, I’ll scratch your back if you’ll scratch mine. Always looking for a new angle to work. Feel them out about outlandish proposals and learn what their desires are.

This takes people with the motivation and time to do it regularly. But it is difficult, as you all know. I am not a very good ambassador as my presence here ebbs and flows (Thanks Nathan). I believe (with a few notable exceptions) that it tends to be the norm. So here is what I propose we do in order to strengthen our diplomacy. I want to get more people involved. Below is the a staffing, I believe that we need to conduct adequate diplomacy. Note I added two “high” level; positions. Not sure if they are needed or not, but I think it would help.

We need a Diplomacy despot (MoDA) and an assistant (FAM)
Also we also need a PR person, a spin doctor.

These three set policy for their areas of responsibility

Minister of Diplomatic Affairs: Sets policy, acts as a high level filter, organizes the diplomacy office..

Minister of Foreign Affairs: Effectively the Vice MoDA, but primarily directs and backs-up ambassadors.

Minister of Foreign Relations : PR person, a spin doctor The one who publishes our “spin”

Ambassadors: Conducts day to day conversations with the other teams we need two or three (two with one back-up) per team.

Individuals in any position may be also referred to as diplomats.

This gives us (3) high level officials (HLO) and currently (10-15) ambassadors.

Currently we have 1 HLO and 6 ambassadors here is the breakdown….

MoDA:
ManicStarSeed
Ambassadors:

Vox: Nbarclay, ManicStarSeed
RP: OPD
Lego: DeepO
GoW: Zeit
ND: Alva

We need at least 4 (up to 9) people willing and able to help focus on regular diplomacy with each team and 2 others to fill HLO. That’s a minimum of 6 people required to step up…

Like I said, I am willing to be a backup ambassador type person. That would probably require that I figure out how to get into chats.

I'm a veteran diplomat from the ISDG (CFC Team, of course. ) I'd be interested in being a PR person, or perhaps a back-up ambassador.

Given that ... 1) All the spin-doctoring, deception and roleplaying doesn't interest me at all, and 2) I don't have the time (nor inclination) to spend a lot of time chatting to the other teams in IRC ... I don't think I'm the right man for the job.

Oh, and Arrian: Thanks! If this gets approved, I'll leave them a message. I want to go back to the regular Sunday 21h GMT chats with Lego, I don't know if this fits you.

If I can figure out how to get into and participate in chats (never done it) I could probably make that fairly regularly.

Chat: there used to be a 'poly java interface, but I never got it to work, and I don't know if it is still active. Otherwise you will need a IRC client (I'm using mIRC, but there are others, possibly smaller). I'm not sure, I thought it was a couple of MBs in size, so that's not too bad even on a phone modem. It's like a couple of Nathan's e-mails

IRC is easy once someone shows you what to do. There's all sorts of weird fancy stuff you can do, but if all you want is to log onto somewhere and chat it's straightforward.

You'll figure it out, dude.

www.mirc.com is the place to download the most common client.

Thanks for showing intrest and a willingness to help. Since diplomacy takes a bit of work, and we need to imposes some limits. Therefor if you have a diplomatic position, you shouldn't sign up for another. That dosent mean that you cant back-up someone in a pinch. It is just that the more bodies focused on a single civ, the less chance of something falling between the cracks...
Let us not divide the ambassadors energy.

So uit appears that the verdict is not in regarding the PR minister, that is fine, lets discuss the pros and cons more...

That leaves NYE, OctavianX (Welcome, by the way) Arrian and Shiber who are interested...

If it is OK with everyone, I would really like to "appoint" NYE to FAM, as he stated, he is already maintains contact with all the other civs. I also like his diplomacy filters.. He tends to speak wisdom and calmness. This is a key. I believe that we can work out some basic diplomacy values and policies that would "shape" our general tone.

Arrian spoke up and offered to work with DeepO with Lego.... keep your friends close and your enemies closer, ehhh Arrian

I am tempted to task Octavian X with RP. He can help OPD. I am hoping that his "new hotness" will melt our "old crustyness" with RP. Opinions anyone?

Shiber, I guess that you have the choice of working with Alva with ND, Zeit with GoW or taking Vox completely off my plate. I think that nbarclay has doen an excellent job as ambassador (standing in for my slackard-ness) and would like to see him continue to back it up or become primary contact, but either way I should step down from that. The prioity I have is fill GoW, then ND then Vox. The choice is yours Shiber....

Thats great. I suggest that we get to be good friends with them (to a point). Not much is happening on this front, currently. I can tell you that they seem to feel shut-out of Bob poilitics. Both GoW and ND feel unsafe and played. We have a seemingly good rapport with GoW (Thank's Zeit) so ND is the other one we want to get in good with. Maybe Engineering would be something we need to get from ND, not in the Voxedus.

RP is a different thing. I wonder if Octavian X should contact them and see what they are up to. We can take the tact of... We want a secure trading partner, we also want to stay out of Bob entanglements. How do we know that we can expect RP to be stable....

Just some thoughts....

Good to see we have an influx of newcomers into the Scholia- I assure all the newcomers that we in the Diplo Scholia (Foreign Affairs Ministry) we'll use you until you scream for us to stop, and than some more...

Kudos for MSS, with the help of many others- for succesfuly harnassing the outside pressure and interest in this team, into a revived interest and participation in our Scholia.

Hey, sorry I wasn't online much this weekend. I forgot to mention when I signed up for this that this past weekend (21st, 22nd) and next weekend (28th, 29th) are bad for me.

After that, though, I should be able to get in on some of these chats (once I download mIRC).

well, I'm going to try to catch someone from Lego tonight, yesterday I returned at 1:30 am, and was not in the mood for chatting. Don't worry about the weekends, those can be busy for me as well.

When I get home, I definately am going to write a MP to Lego, asking for a chat, asking about the map, and asking about Theo.
