i know fortifications have a "power" rank. but do upgraded archers give the tower more bite or is it irrelevant. ie. ancient age archer is as good as crossbowman inside a tower?

I haven't noticed any difference, but it pays to upgrade before seige weapons get powerful enough to level towers and forts quickly. You'll be glad you did when the protection of a tower or fort suddenly melts away.

I think a towers strength is determined by the number of units garizoned and not by the type of unit

actually each archer unit increases power by 1, while each light infantry unit increases power by only 0.5. i don't think garrisoned non-range units help tower attack at all
