We'll have a Galley next turn in Incensity.

I still think it's better to explore westwards first, because I think that the most land is on that side of the world. The map generator usually has a N-S strip of ocean at the west side of the map, which we are close to from our side.
However, the trip between Incensity and Hispanica is at least 8 turns by sea, and Hispanica is already building our second Galley.

So, let's send this Galley to the east, looking for new lands and new civilizations, to go where no Monster has gone before (sorry about the Star Trek line).

The question is: who should be on this boat? A warrior? A NumMerc? None, or both, perhaps?

Sending a NM would risk getting a premature Golden Age if we encounter any hostile civ.

I think we should at least send one unit, to be able to enter goody huts if we find those.

Please discuss!

We'll also need a name for the ship. I propose: AS* Markos.

* = Apolytonian Ship.

AFAIK, there was a nice name mentioned before - Princess of Apolyton.

I think sending it westwards sounds like a good idea, considering we plan to have another one going in the opposite direction in not-so-distant future (scouting out GCA's territory is also of some interest to us).

Vondrack - I just proposed to send it to the east, since Incensity is on the east coast as well. This saves sailing (rowing) time.

Princess of Apolyton is a fine name.

I agree with sending the Galley East-SouthEast.

I would like to send a Warrior along. We need to think up a cool name for him too!

As for units, Id say warriors are enough. Why send a NM, its not like we are going to disembark and start a war..... The only way I'd send a NM is if its combined with a settler

Where is our second galley to be built in?

If in Hispanica, then I would support the S/SE direction to save the rowing time. But if it's going to be built in Incensity again, then the rowing time does not really matter - and the N/NW/W direction is more likely to reveal something notable.

We might want to exchange maps BEFORE we send out the Galley into the unknown; otherwise GCA and CFC will get that info too; furthermore, they'd know we have a Galley out there (since it'll only shows a strip of coastal land).

I didn't mean I wanted to stick a settler on the galley, I meant that I dont see a need for a high defense unit on the galley when there is no settler. As in warriors can pop goody huts just as good as NM can and they cost less.

It would probally be worthwhile to use a horseman instead of a warrior, that is if we had HBR and horseman :P

We have a lot of regular warriors kicking around - why don't we send one of them on a Galley and give him the chance of promotion against barbs and finding treasure enough to pay for himself.

BTW East/SouthEast is fine.

Before sending him off though, I think we should get CFC's map to see if perhaps there is a link to the German team which we maybe perhaps suspect they have contact with.

Moves have just been made in the turnplay to make Swords in both Poly and Banana to send with the Galleys. No risk of GA triggering and an edge over barbs. Both of those cities were just building NMS we didn't need anyway. The Sword and Galley are ready next turn, then we will go East with our first Galley! Exact moves to be decided and are being discussed in the chat.

Silly waste of resources.

There's always a large, uncrossable ocean to between the continents at the edge of the map. If we get a map from GCA then we'll have knowledge of the entire continent.

There is always a band of water between the edges of the map, true. However, in our case we have coast right on that edge. It is possible that we will see coast or seas 'on the other side' from our own coasts. If we find a passage there, it will be a coup.

No, he means that sending the Galley East is a waste of time. Trip has aruged that the Eastern ocean (which IS imeediately to our East) tends to be the largest in these maps.

Uh, since when do the edges of the map ALWAYS have a thin band of water? I've played in several games in MP where continents stuck through the sides of the map. While the evidence makes it look unlikely here, it is entirely possible that there could be a lil' knob island out there somewhere with a hut. We'll never know until we give it a shot.

I wouldn't be surprised if GCA hems, haws, and then backs out on a map trade in their current situation anyhow.
