I had a friend who also believed in the 1 out of 10 concept. He would bet people that he could get laid by somebody he didn't know. He would then ask 10 girls pretty much what MikeH's housemate asked... but more along the lines of... Hey beautiful, you want to go back to my place and _____. Many would slap him in the face, some would just laugh... but usually, it didn't take 10 women before one of them said yes.

As the ole saying goes... If you don't ask, they can't say yes
