do NOT get aol. of course, that should be a no-brainer. that's all the advice i can provide, seeing that i don't know any brit isps.

It sounds odd but AOL is actually one of the better ISP's in the UK. Better than they are in the US. Particularly for ADSL, especially if you want the hardware free (their current offer if you upgrade a dial up account).
The only real downside I have found is that you have to ignore all the junk they provide and just stick to using it as a basic service.
