MOW: Unit Naming Convention Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

Okay, we clearly have more units than we have names for, and once we start getting dozens and dozens more, the problem will only worsen. In order to be able to do my orders correctly (or for anyone to know which units they're talking about) we need to figure out a naming convention for our units to keep track of them.

I suggest we add Roman numerals on the end of units to help identify them. Thus, the Swordsman produced next turn would be renamed "Swordsman I."

Ideas/suggestions welcome. We need to decide upon something soon, as we have quite a few new units on the way (5 in the next few turns).

I think we should start a Regimental system, just for roleplaying purposes, it might get to be kinda neat.

I suggest we name units with a number (be it roman or arabic) and make up a Regiment for each city. Note that each regiment's name should NOT be in any way related to the city so we don't let the enemy know which cities may have barracks etc.

Anyway, if you like this idea, we can even start a roleplaying thread for each Regiment. I think it would help people get into the game and get a good feel for their units, perhaps making stories of barb-hunting and stuff, maybe even getting medals for successful barb combat ...

Tired of ads?

The citizens of a given city would have to decide on an appropriate name for their regiment(s).

A regiment should also comprise a mximum number of units. Hense, a given city, an Arsenal perhaps, may have multiple regiments. It also removes the possible problem that XReg XXVI of all swords would give intelligence regarding the number of swords we are likely to have when combined with YReg VIII.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Which city built unit with first two digits randomized---Unit name---chonological unit # from that city with last two digits randomized---Cronological unit # overall with first two and last two digits randomized.

So this:

1301BetaHound0145W870162

Means this:

1301BetaHound0145W870162

or

01BetaHound01W01

BetaHound was built in Apolyton, he was the first unit out of Apolyton, he was the first unit overall.

This helps to conceal our unit information while giving us a way to track units. To us, BetaHound would simply be refered to as W01 or WBetaHound.

You just remeber to strike the first two numbers, then the last two numbers, then the first two AND the last two numbers in each subsequent set of number's.

You could even leave the 0's (placeholder's) out to make it more confusing for the enemy.

Please don't use any kind of numbering system except for regular numbers (1, 2, ... ).

Roman numerals look too confusing.
With other systems, it'll be too easy to make an error in the orders or during a turn.

I found a Random Name Generator on the web:
http://www.babynames.com/V5/index.p...tent=rename.php

(yes, I searched the web for "baby names" )

This "thing" is meant to be able to rename yourself (Why? Don't ask me). It generates names from a current name plus a "style" (Natural, Wild, Traditional, ...) you enter into it.

I suggest the consul on duty puts in the name of our last unit, and select a style he feels like at that particular moment. And voila, a new name is born!

For reference purposes, use a regular number to go with it (like we do currently).

Example: I put in BetaHound + Creative.
I got "Justis" for our new unit.

Kinda fun. The combination number+name ("W15 Justis") also provides an easy way to distinguish between our units.

5 units in the next few turns? Are we going to pay upkeep for them??

Suffering from ads?

Well, If all the new units are mercenaries, then we're fine, as I have lots of people requesting names for mercs. and warriors are well in hand as well

however, we have problems with galleys and warriors... No one seems to be offereing their usernames for use for those names.

I may have to veto that...

The idea of having two different segments of the name, which NYE suggested, is good. I could put AGA and whatnot into their names to help distinguish them.

Having just looked at the MOW summary, I highly recommend arabic rather than roman numerals.

Agreed. Roman figures are difficult to read quickly.

"NuclearWarrior" - haha.
