It's not the Poms who are whinging this time. (Rugby) Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Note: this isn't supposed to be the new 'official rugby thread'. I'll let our esteemed regulars start that one up after Caligastia and Finbar are done mocking me in this thread.

All this week we've had various sections of the New Zealand public and media whinging about getting beaten by England at rugby.

Now it's the turn of that notorious idiot David Campese to get in on the act. Seemingly terrified at the prospect that the Aussies might conceivably lose to England at the weekend (FWIW, I don't think we'll win), our friend David has launched a particularly stupid attack on the state of English rugby.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rug...nal/3002550.stm

quote:
"It's clear that English rugby hasn't moved on a jot over the past 10 years," he told the BBC Sport website.

Well that's nice of you to say, seeing as we've been ranked the number one team in the world all year. Thank God we haven't got any better in the last decade or we might have kicked your ass even harder at Twickenham last year.

quote:
"There was a time when rugby was exciting? Remember that?" he said.

Translation: Waaaaaa, the southern hemisphere isn't guaranteed to win the World Cup anymore! You've spoiled it for all of us!

To be honest, David, the England.v.AB's match last weekend was very exciting if you were English. It's not our fault the All Blacks weren't good enough to breach our defence enough times, even when we had two fewer players than them. If that's the kind of "exciting, expansive rugby" that the SH teams are apparently masters of then you can keep it - and stick it up your arse!

Or maybe if the AB's could have found a kicker half as good as Wilkinson then they wouldn't have had to rely on their toothless try-scoring machine to get them points. You see ... when England come against a good team like the AB's, and find themselves being pushed back into defence, we're good enough to a) not concede many points, and b) still manage to score enough to win the game. Shocking, isn't it? You should try it some time....

So the England team were guilty of rather a lot of cynical fouls? Oh. My. God. The shock! The horror!
Everyone knows that the southern hemisphere teams have been playing like that for years, and have been very successful with it too. Since it appears to work pretty damn well why shouldn't we be allowed to do it too?

I didn't realise that the England rubgy team was, as Mr. Campese seems to believe, supposed to be entertaining southern hemisphere crowds. I was under the foolish delusion that we were supposed to be beating up on the teams and making our own fans happy.

Obviously we've made a terrible mistake somewhere. We didn't realise that England teams whould always be the ***** of the SH teams and bend over to accept a shafting every time we play you.

I'm of the opinion that England will both lose to the Aussies this weekend and fail to win the World Cup. And I hope when that happens we have the good grace to accept defeat without crying and whinging. However, if by some minor miracle we do win the WC, I very much doubt that people such as Mr. Campese will be able to take it in good spirit.

I feel better after that rant. Thanks for listening.

What a great post. The media has been filled with whinging SH players and pundits all week. It's embarassing. We're ranked #1 in the world because we've just beaten every SH team NZ twice, Aussies thrice and won the grand slam. We played some great rugby in the six nations, it's a bit unlucky that our two wins over the All Blacks have been with two of our poorest performances of the last couple of years. What's wrong with winning at all costs? You have to play like that. Australia and the All Blacks always have, we were just a bit naive and too sportsmanlike back in the day. Now we're just as cynical and professional about things as they always have been.

I also think we won't win the World Cup, mainly because of heat rather than quality though. I think closing the roof might backfire on them this time though. Whatever happens it'll be an improvement over the 76-0 in Brisbane back in '98.

At least they're good and boring, rather than being totally inept and boring like our cricket team. We should be thankful for small mercies.

Pessimism springs eternal.

As for the rest of your post...well you could hardly expect a major rugby nation to lose a big game without anyone whinging could you? I mean how long have England been whining about their losses? Ever since they invented the game... You guys are so used to losing that even when your rugby team is the best in the world you are in such a state of disbelief that you don't dare to contemplate English victory any further because the Rugby Gods are sure to smite you once again.

Yeah, England were so sportsmanlike. The poor English - they were just too nice to win. I say old chap, that's a bit off, eh, what?

Yes, the rugby gods have decreed that England will never win a world cup. "It was the weather - too bloody hot for our lads"

If you are under 37 and English no major national sporting team has ever won anything in your lifetime (only thing I can think of is Mens Athletics European cup... exactly!!!), we basically can't really comprehend winning anything because it's never happened.

Anyway, if you thought we whinged back in the old days about your cheating ways you'd think you'd be more magnanimous in defeat now 'cause all the comments we're getting from the SH are pretty pathetic. Makes it funnier though.

Got spare money?

I can't believe we're getting battered on one side for saying we're the best team in the world and at the same time getting battered for saying that even for the best team in the world (that's England, but true for the All Blacks in the past) it's always tough beating Australia in Australia so you can't guarantee to do it.

Both those things are true.

Also, we have some old backs who are vital to the team and who suffer towards the end of games in the heat. That's another fact which it's just sensible to take into account.

We're just being realistic. This is England's best ever chance to win the World Cup but it'd be naive to say it was definite, or that it would be easy. Just as it would be naive to say that we'll definitely beat Australia on Saturday.

You guys are so used to whining you even whine when you're winning - about the opposition's whining. What do you guys want? All must bow before the might of the English rugby team and pay homage? "Kneel inferior mortals!!!"

When England lose (as is usual) to NZ or Australia - they whine. NZ and Australia are not suprised, after all, it's the English.

When England win (it had to happen eventually) against NZ or Australia - they whine that we are not happy to be beaten, and once again, we are not suprised.

Yeah but I would like to see the guys jab back with the heavy weight ones – like two wins in a row for us over you, three over the Wallabies (four after tomorrow I hope). Oh and the fact the ABs have not beaten us since 1999.

That’s mainly because it is a series of detailed exchanges requiring blow by blow point making. And as the only regular English contributor I had a huge corner to fight.

Just ignore all the bits you don't like and focus on one point. It's much more annoying for the person you are arguing against. If they say anything funny or clever, pretend you never read it.

F******* and S***** are banned words in Rugby threads, the penguins are only playing a heavily corrupted and depraved offspring of the game of Rugby.

Cricket is tolerated though you will seldom see any comment from me about this strange game.

I have just one thing to say:

Go, England! Stomp them!
