New Terrain: Smudge Terrain Set Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

I have created a new terrain set for Civilization 3 PTW, though there is no reason why it can't be used with regular Civ3 as well. There are four files.

----------------------------------
To Install for PTW:
1. Unzip the contents of the P0 file to the Civ3 PTW scenario folder.
2. Unzip the P1 file to the Smudge Terrain|Art|Terrain folder that was created after you unzipped the first file.
3. Unzip the P2 file to the same location as the P1 file
4. Unzip the P3 file to the Smudge Terrain|Art folder
5. Start the Game and select the Smudge Terrain Scenario.
----------------------------------
To Install for regular Civ3:
1. Back up your Terrain folder, Cities folder, and Resource.pcx file.
2. Unzip the P1 and P2 files to the Art|Terrain folder
3. Unzip the P3 file to the Art folder
4. The P0 file is not needed for this install and you can now start the game as normal.
----------------------------------

I have included screenshots below. The links to the files are listed below.

If one of the mods could allow me to upload a single zip file (5.17 MB) that would be great.

P0 1.02 KB : http://apolyton.net/upload/files/Sh...geTerrainP0.zip

P1 3.05 MB : http://apolyton.net/upload/files/Sh...geTerrainP1.zip

P2 1.72 MB : http://apolyton.net/upload/files/Sh...geTerrainP2.zip

P3 398 KB : http://apolyton.net/upload/files/Sh...geTerrainP3.zip

don't say that, warpstorm would be insulted. simple watercolor-filter didn't work (tiles didn't fit nicely next to eachother)

still missing the inverted filter

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Perhaps someone with a flair for photochoping could make an 'embossed metal' version of the game images. They would be somewhat mono-chromatics but could be nicely added to the 'gold' edition!

Actually, that dosen't sound like a bad idea -- but how would you tell the water types apart?

Hmm the water types may be difficult if taken straight from the game but I am thinking texture would be the key.

A coastal tile would have a rough texture for the coastline and a medium texture for the water.

The sea tiles could have an all medium texture.

Finally the ocean tiles would have a very gentle (smooth ripples?) texture.

This would give the impression of the metal tiles being rough, then smoother and smoother until you reach the open sea where it is gentle and roling.

What do you think??

Tired of ads?

Gold Terrain would be fairly interesting. The problem I encountered in making the terrain below was that at this point the terrins are not very distinguishable. The screenshot below shows hills, mountains, grassland, and some coast. I might decide to post some more ideas here and if people like them maybe I will choose one and make a full set out of it.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I was thinking about increasing contrast and using emboss and a metal simulating filter, that way the tiles would look like hammered metal instead of just being colorized. Gold is quite difficult to do in monochomatic schemes without losing detail as you can see!
My skills are not up on the necessary level BUT I will try!

Okay, I found some time to change the foreign advisor screen background. It's not a big deal, though...

Here is another screenie that shows how I imagine the terrain changes. I only did one mountain by now, so palette colors are limited. But when I finish changing all mountains, they will have a much brighter and more 3D-like look.

I'm using Paintshop Pro 6.0...

Terrain changes are way more difficult than these interface issues... will need more time...

That's... really really weird looking. Interesting. Though I think having all the terrain in that filter could get really hard on the eyes after a while.

Unfortunately, you also probably can't distinguish between grassland, plains, tundra, and desert with it

Get a bigger avatar today!

It is difficult to make a terrain set that is one color scheme and still worth using. textures are the key to being able to distiguish one terrain from another.

btw, the user interface looks good.

I agree with Sheik... the idea was to have an all gold graphics for the Gold Edition but it seems to me that for the sake of looks and class that a better idea is the conversion of the user interface and city, background, civilopedia, etc. screens to have the golden touch look. Great work and experimenting for us Caliban... I think making the controls and backgrounds gold is great!
