I'm getting it at 8 the morning after.

I have to admit, despite the general dorkiness that goes with it, I'm really psyched.

I'm pretty young, and hit the Harry potter fad with full force, read all the previous book, and liked them. Now its been a few years, and I seem to be more interested in getting my drivers licence opposed to Harry potter, but i'm almost positive I'll be reading the book within a month of its release

Just overheard in the break room over coffee:

Person A: "I can't wait to start reading the new Harry Potter book this weekend! Have you read any of the books?"

Person B: *with an expression as if they've just stepped in dog faeces* "Harry Potter? But isn't that a children's book? (said as if 'children' was synonymous with 'cockroach')

@ pretentious snobs.

(note: people like this are not pretentious snobs simply because they dislike Harry Potter, it's a free country after all, but because they automatically consider it to be beneath them - often without having read a single page.)

/edit: What's with all the typos? God I'm tired this morning...

All the anti-Potter snobs I know changed their tune when they actually read the books.

Everyone who likes Potter should read Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials Trilogy. The last book of the trilogy won the Whitbread prize (overall prize, not just the children's prize). It's got the same sense of excitement as Potter but it's more original and epic, better written.

I didn't think much of Pullman, to be honest. And yes I did read the first book - I don't know if the later ones were any better since I didn't bother to read them after the first one failed to impress me.

I admit that the whole thing about the animal spirits that each child has (or something like that ... it was a while ago) was interesting and original. However the book seemed rather souless to me. It was no fun - didn't have that "one more page" feeling for me that I've gotten with every Potter book.

The mileage of others may (and DOES) vary, of course. I think I'm in the minority in much preferring Rowling to Pullman (of adults who have read both).

Slightly more expensive than buying it from the shops because of the P&P, but at least I won't have to queue up for hours to get it.

I heard on the radio this morning that Asda and Tesco are both selling it for under a tenner - despite a RRP of £16.99

Fair enough. The best thing about the trilogy is that it increases in scale and scope with each book. Starts off as a small scale story but ends up absolutely massive.

I found it very good in a page turny aspect.

and by the way the books are excellent.

Well-plotted, filled with humour, well-developed characters, and some very insightful lines about courage, dealing with depression, etc

Much better than most popular fiction for adults.
