We'll receive the First Save tomorrow, if all goes to plan (who is setting up the game, anyway?). We'll need to decide whether to move or settle.
Since I won't be here tomorrow, I'm going to use this thread to give my opinion about moving the initial settler, then give the mike to you guys.
I think it's very important to have our first city on a river. It won't need an aqueduct later, and the commerce bonus is nice to have.
==> So, if we start one tile away from a river, move the settler.
I'm not too fond of a coastal capital. However, if it also has some nice production tiles, it could construct wonders like the Colossus later.
==> Only move to the coast if we'll have decent production there.
A luxury is nice to have, but not necessary to include in the 9-tile radius of the capital.
==> Don't move to only include a luxury.
A food bonus resource is a very big advantage, esp. since we'll not be the most aggressive civ around and therefore need to build things up.
==> Move the settler if it means including a food bonus resource in its 9-tile radius.
Some bonus grassland, forest-with-game or plains-with-cow is essential for first growth and decent production.
==> At least include one of these tile types in the 9-city radius, and preferably at least 3 in the 21-tile radius.
I recently discovered another advantage of moving the settler: our culture will be slightly less than the other civs'. This means that our city will not show up in the F11 Top-5 cities screen. The other teams can't use this intelligence to see what we're up to.
Good luck!
