I had problems with people intruding my personal space until my last ex worked those issues out a lil bit.

Depends really on the context; a lot of people insist on a handshake at the very least..

If I find it irritating I tell people that I find it irritating. Problem solved.

Some cultures are non-contact, other's are not. There's no real hard and fast rule.

Usually it's just handshakes for me. When I play soccer and someone on my team scores a goal, I'll sometimes pat them on the back (always upper back, as near the shoulder as possible). I've seen Gary Neville and David Beckham kiss each other - that's really not my scene.

I've been hugged hello a few times. I think it shows how insane (conservative?) I am that I think you should only hug someone you really care about.

Nah. Starting for yourself, are are four distances/spaces. I can't remember the names of all of them, but there are "intimate space" (innermost) and social space. The distances vary from place to place. In a densely packed place such as Hong Kong, all the spaces are squeezed together. On the other hand, in Wyoming, a person's social space might be a couple of kilometres.

Yep. Hugs are great! I dunno if it's karma or that golden horseshoe effect, but just about all the ladies in our building give me a hug if they walk by the desk or we pass in the hall. Not that I mind o'course, but I do think that it mystifies some of my male coworkers (well, truthfully, it mystifies me as well, but I'm not about to start complaining! ).

Guys...eh...aside from the occassional handshake, not much contact at all.

I was quite hostile to being touched until shortly before I met my girlfriend. Now, I care much less, even though I still hate being tickled.
I actually enjoy it when people pat me on the shoulder (there's a very touchy girl in the class) even though I am not promoting it / not doing it myself.

It has to be done very tactfully and from someone who I know very well (if male, females are quite welcome to cuddle me at will ). However when done by someone who is not familiar, especially one of these 'go-getters' I am more likely to construe it as an act of condescension which would annoy me greatly...
