Hair length in the past? Suffering from ads?

I imagine that hundreds of years ago, people didn't have much access to effective shears and razors so did people generally have huge amounts of hair and massive beards?

Also, movies about Africa or slaves always show the Africans with real short hair or bald... shouldnt they have huge heads of hair? I mean, Amistad was just on tv, and all the africans had short or no hair... how did they get hair-cuts, especially ones so close?

again, i don't get it...

thanks

The fact that you cannot imagine it does not make it so.

You are falling prey to the fallacy of primitive stupidity. Just because people didn't have the things we have today doesn't mean they were idiots. Razors have existed for thousands of years. High quality steel has been around almost as long (in small batches).

Are you saying that a zulu can make a spear that will kill you but they can't make a simple blade that can cut their hair if they so choose.

I can't see the advantages of letting your hair grow too much if I was a warrior.

BTW. I have always had rather short hair. For a year I had hair long enough to part, but went back to the short look. If my hair is too long that it can't air dry in a few minutes, then it's too freaking long.

That's why Philip of Macedona made his soldiers cut their beards. Long hair gives the enemy something to grab and hold you in place while he kills you.

Humans have had knives sharper than scalpels for thousands of years. Sharpen a piece of rock long enough, and you'll get a damn fine blade.

Tired of ads?

The fact is, you don't need metal to make a razor. Properly done, a piece of flint (or other microcrystalline quartz stone) can become a fantastically sharp, if somewhat fragile blade.

Same goes for bivalve shells, only less so.

Obsidian can give a nice edge as well. Curved as well for scraping heads bald.

There is another way to remove hair quickly. Set fire to it (very short hair obviously to avoid a bad burn).

Jesus that smells awful. Burning hair is one of the worst aromas ever. The only thing worse, that I've encountered, it burning spiders.

AS, you'll notice that in ancient sculptures and paintings, people are frequently shown with short hair or shaved heads (think about the Egyptians).

Metal is not necessary. In the ancient Mediterranean, shaving was done with sharpened clam shells.

I've got a friend who shaves his face with a sickeningly sharp knife, and sharpens the same knife on the bottom of his foot. Never gets cuts or scratches.

He's an odd one.

and yes, Short hair- less stuff to grab on. It has been a sign of masculinity for a very long time.
