I would name our workers after non-military characters like Brian, Judith, Concorde, Princess Lucky, Witch...
Military units get named after military characters: Sir Robin, Biggus Dickus, Black Beast of Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh...

As for unit naming, at some point we'll be enforced to resort to numbers, because we run out of Monty names. My concern is: Don't give the same numbers to different units (like 1st Warrior, 1st Spearman, 1st Catapult, 2nd Warrior, 2nd Spearman, 2nd Catapult and so on), but number them in ascending order regardless of the unit type (1st Warrior, 2nd Spearman, 3rd Catapult, 4th Warrior, 5th Spearman, 6th Catapult).
This has several advantages. At first, we don't need to keep track at several numbers for each unit type. Second, it scares the hell out of the enemy, when he spots the "25th Swordsman" (holy ****, they have 25 swords...)
It would even be better to name units not using its type, because this would cause massive renaming after upgrades, but using its class. Classes are:
- Offensive infantry (Warrior, Swordsman, Medieval Infantry, Guerilla)
- Defensive infantry (Spearman, Pikeman, Musketeer, Rifleman, Infantry, Mechanized Infantry)
- Fast unit (Chariot, Horseman, Knight, Cavalry, Tank, Modern Armor)
- Bombard unit (Catapult, Cannon, Artillery, Radar Artillery)
- Offensive infantry could have the name "Paladin" (except Warriors, they get real names)
- Defensive infantry gets either the name "Infantry", or we name them "Pikeman" till they get guns (Gunpowder) and "Infantry" afterwards
- Fast units have the name "Mounted" till Cavalry, and "Armored" afterwards
- Bombard units, well, I need to think of a name... "Bombardier" perhaps?
