Zylka:

rappers sound good in a some place like at an open mic or something along those lines... i saw a video-tape of biggie rapping on the street and he came off completely clear but in concerts... blah...

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Scary enough, I agree with zylka. If more rap acts jammed with live bands and good funk/jazz musicians, my respect for rap would go up ten fold. Sampling sucks.

They could learn a thing or two from George clinton and parliament/p-funk.

Suffering from ads?

The only way "biggie" could come off clear was by lathering his thick, gravy filled throat with preparation H

Come to think of it, he comes off much better after being riddled with bullets - DEAD silent!

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Jac:

the problem with this is that as big as rap has become, it is still at its heart a street corner activity. I think this was epitomized by the old Run DMC song, Sucker Emcees... in the video, you see them standing around and J comes by with a stereo putting up a simple beat and Run and DMC just start rhyming..."Two years ago... a friend of mine... asked me to say some emcee rhymes..."

that is the heart of rap; the image of the boys on the corner just flowing to nothing more but a human beatbox or a stereo playing looped samples. performing with live bands ruins that aspect.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

Zylka:

actually, very few of the big rappers were criminals, etc. ironically, someone like Nas or Jay-Z or even the big thug gangster 2pac were somewhat of nerds growing up... not nerds in the sense of pocket protectors and what not but nerds in the sense that they didn't do nothing wrong (very few rappers had criminal records before they became famous), etc. if they had been drug dealers and what not, they'd be in prison for 20 years and we'd never hear of them

thanks

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

I saw Eminem back at the end of 1999 when he was doing a small promo tour for his first single/album. He didn't cut it as a performer in packed, indoor, sweaty venue so i am not surprised he doesn't cut it in a 70000 capacity open air venue to be honest. Also combine that with the lack of the edge he had in first 2 albums with the last two, you can see him not doing well.

I think his thing is more the producing and writing side of things rather than the actual performing. Guess he leaves that to the stage school kids.
