Which one of those puppies should I get for college? The dorm is a double with a total area of around 190 square feet. The desk is pretty small (about 4 feet long and two feet deep) Can you guys help me?

The footprint of both imacs is the same. The 17" mac is really nice, so get it if you can afford it as the extra real estate is worth it. It will fit on that desk no problem and you can alter the position of the screen so it is as far away or as close as you like. With the speakers plugged in the new imac takes up less space than the old CRT one(which I still have - it still runs fine, so no point in replacing it). You can move the screen out of the way as well (this is incredibly useful).

I set one of these up for a colleague a couple of months back and it almost turned me off the idea of minitowers forever. Wait until July and you should get a free upgrade to Panther when it comes out.

Have you considered getting a powerbook or an ibook? considering the prices that are being given to students(100 dollars of the already absurdly low price of the 15 and 12in powerbooks) i think that the laptops are a better deal. I bought a ibook last year, and i've become hooked, as a student its great to have the mobility of a laptop(taking with you studying at the library, espescially with a airport card.) its also a great note taking tool. Plus the sizes of the laptops whould help with your desk space(plus being able to work anywhere else you can sit down). And even now the powerbooks are just as powerful as the imacs(plus the books are soon to be updated) just my 2$ worth. either purchase is great, but for students i think that the books' are a better deal.

Going to agree with CivPatriot here... an iBook or PowerBook can sometimes be a better choice, especially as a student.

I know back when I had money it was nice being able to have my iBook on campus and then my tower in my dorm (with the extra power for games and such) but I was lucky money-wise.

Laptops are often better for students, though.

i agree with panag on this, with a student discount the already heavily discounted powerbooks are an outstanding deal, not only do you get a faster system, but in the 12in PB you get bluetooth builtin and Airport Extreme, the 15in powerbook, also sports a pc card slot, in addition to its outstanding 15in screen. either one are a great deal. until the price offering changes the 12 and 15in powerbook are the best buy.

Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

Thanks for all the help guys. Now since the G5 is out, they also increased the student discounts for some of the other comps. One of the problems I have with the laptops is that they are so nice and so portable that someone can jack it. At least with an imac, if you see someone walking around with it, it would be suspicious.
