Greek military defends the west against terror Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Excerpt from BBC:

quote:
An explosives-laden ship seized off Greece had documents linking it to a non-existent firm based in Sudan, say officials.
The Baltic Sky was carrying 680 tons of explosives when it was stormed by special forces off Greece's western coast on Sunday.

Greek Shipping Minister George Anomeritis says the ship's manifest showed that cargo was officially bound for a company with "a post office box in Khartoum that did not exist".

The cargo loaded in Tunisia was there in transit or was it manufactured in Tunisia or does it come from somewhere else?

The "Baltic Sky" (=name of the ship) sports a Comores Islands flag, its base is the Marshal Islands, and was headed for a company in Khartoum but which does not exist. Prior to entering Greece it had passed through Turkey and Albania.

Put an end to popups!

The explosives, which are equivalant to that of an atomic bomb, had been loaded in Tunisia in 12 May 2003.

There is no information available as to where the explosives themselves were made.

680 tons. That sounds like a lot, I wonder what it means?

Equivalent to 680 tons TNT of modern high explosive?

680 tons of fertilizer bomb stuff?

or 680 tons of high explosives of unknown explosive power?

Either way that could have blown up an awful lot of ****. Close to 1 Kiloton, or a mirv nuclear warhead.

Imagine if they had just sailed right into London or New York (or in this case the Piraeus), and when the harbour patrol boarded them just plow right for shore and blown themselves up.

It's scary, that there is still enough terrorist doofs around to pull something like this off.

I rather think it was a big shipment destined to many terrorists, somewhere in Europe or in the ME, for bus attacks or similar.
Hopefully the inquiry will allow us to put an end to this smuggling route, which could reduce the amount of small-scale attacks for some time

I think that that opinion sounds plausible considering that together with the explosives there were 8,000 detonators.

But you can't be sure for where the attacks were intended. As said the destination of the ship was Khartum in Africa. After that place.... who knows.

It means three things :

- there are still bad guys with big money for organizing this kind of procurement and transportation

- the war against terrorism has not yet caught all of them but works well enough to prevent them from getting this stuff

- it seems that the delivery has not been made as planned: this could be an effect of the WAT or of unexpected developpements in the ME.

Overall a very good news and a warning.

Bravo!

Well if they were going East, then maybe they were headed Lebanon->Syria->Israel->the local disco?

Probably when the Israelis turn the screws the Palestianians import?

You'd think they'd be headed west if this was an al Qaeda/Islamic-militants-blowing-up-synagogues-in-Europe thing.

Yes maybe. Since, if it was headed for Europe, from Tunisia it is certaintly easier to just go north through Spain or Italy.

But from here...

Israel is relatively just a jump away.

But considering the sheer amount of explosives and the number of detonators, I wouldn't be surprised if some of it was also headed for other countries like Iraq or Afganistan.

Tired of ads?

Markos probably swam to the ship all by himself, them boarded it with cutlass in mouth and a machine gun in each hand. Then he said something memorable, although carefully so that the cutlass wouldn't cut him, and then he totally flipped out and shot everybody and then shot them all again and ate the livers.

Even if Baltak Anatoliy, the captain, doesn't say anything, which I believe he will, we already have the future ittinairary of the ship from the bridge microchip and from surveillance of their telecommunications, according to reports.

And here's Markos, his hair cut short by the Greek army, bringing the captain to justice. He seems a bit pissed and the captain a bit not at ease.
