Anime fans: Big news Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Zenryaku,

Okay, I was planning to wait until the end of July to do another anime thread, but this news can't wait.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is finally, actually being planned for a US release. The only catch is that the company is waiting for 1500 requests online.

http://www.gineigoods.com/form/

For those not familiar with it, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a Space Opera epic, one of the classics of anime. 110 hour long episodes in the main story, 3 movies, and 54 half-hour side-story episodes. Truly an epic.

Let me quote some backstory:

quote:
Backstory

For nearly a thousand years, humanity had expanded throughout the galaxy. Earth was abandoned after its resources were exhausted. Finally, in 2801 AD, on the planet Theoria in the Aldebaran system, a new government was created, the United Space Government (USG). To commemorate this time of great change, a new calendar was introduced, the Universal Calendar (UC).

However, this golden age soon stagnated. Space pirates began to menace transport vessels and passenger liners, riots broke out in major cities, and civilization started to decline. The USG needed a hero.

In 296 UC, Rudolf von Goldenbaum, a commander in the USG Army, became that hero. After quickly defeating the pirates, Goldenbaum became a politician. Slowly, he built his power and influence. In 310 UC, he took over the government, proclaimed the Galactic Empire, and crowned himself as its first Kaiser. The Universal Calendar was replaced with the Reich Calendar (RC). Initially, people rebelled against this new tyrant, but they were quickly and brutally suppressed. Eventually the Galactic Empire moved the capital to the planet Odin.

164 years later, on the slave ice-mining planet Altair-7, Ale Heinessen dreamed of the USG being reborn. He and his followers built a starship, the Ion Fazekath, carved out of a giant dry ice asteroid in order to hide it until its departure. Escaping the spiral arm that the Empire was located in, they braved years of empty space until they reached an adjoining spiral arm and found and colonized the world which they named Heinessen, in honor of their leader, who perished during the journey. They established the democratic Free Planets Alliance, opposed to the tyranny of the Empire. The Universal Calendar was reinstated.

In 640 UC (331 RC), the two sides first encountered each other in the Dagon Starzone. The Alliance forces, led by Lin Pao, brilliantly routed the Imperial forces, who were led by Prince Herbert. Soon, many Imperial soldiers and citizens were defecting to the democratic republic.

The war continued for 120 years, with neither side being able to hold the advantage for long. The Galactic Empire built Iserlohn Fortress to guard one of the two navigational corridors between the two spiral arms. The fortress was coated with liquid metal, which acted both as a shield and a heat sink for its main weapon: Thor's Hammer. The other corridor is the home of the Fezzan Dominion, ostensibly a protectorate of the Empire, but in reality a neutral territory that supplies weapons, technologies, and financing to both sides.
The Story

In 795 UC (486 RC), a change occurs in the now stalemated war. Two heroes emerge: Reinhard von Müsel of the Empire and Yang Wen-Li of the Alliance. Reinhard has two goals in mind: To gain enough political power to free his older sister from the Kaiser, and to eventually rule the universe. Yang, a historian wannabe who originally joined the Alliance armed forces for the free education it offered, simply wants the war to end, since both sides are being slowly destroyed by the constant fighting.

It is here that the story begins...

I haven't seen much, but what I have is very good.

While I'm at it, I'll add that FLCL has apparently been picked up by Cartoon Network...

$2000?! You'd have to be a complete anime nut to pay that much for it, regardless of how epic a series this is.

Suffering from ads?

Yeah, I was thinking of that last night....I'd probably sign the petition, but unless there are some other options (no standalone dvds?), I'll certainly have to wait for the price to drop somewhat before I buy.

--"$2000?! You'd have to be a complete anime nut to pay that much for it,"

Well, I am a complete anime nut, so that's covered ^_^
IIRC the Japanese release was set up as a subscription service. You paid out some each month and got a DVD (or two, don't remember) each month. I wouldn't expect it to be a lump sum thing.

--"but unless there are some other options (no standalone dvds?)"

Probably depends on the number of requests they get through the survey and then the sales when they do start releasing. If it goes over decently I'd expect to see the single discs sold seperately later. No reason not to once you've got all the authoring and packaging done. It'd probably stay direct-order only, though.

Edit:
If nothing else, maybe they'll show up some place like GreenCine.

I guess it's the current anime thread, although the only reason I started it was for LoGH.

--"anyone know what the **** is up with soul taker?"

Never seen it, so I can't help you.

--"I got the Cowboy Beebop movie yesterday and should be watching it today. Has anyone seen it?"

Yeah, it's pretty much like an extended length episode. If you like the show, you'll like the movie.

Got spare money?

Just wanted to let those in the DC area know that the American Film Institute's newly reopened Silver Theater in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland is having an animefest at the end of July/beginning of August.

A Tree of Palme
Castle In The Sky
Jack and the Beanstalk (rare)
Jungle Emporer Leo
Junkers Come Here
Kiki's Delivery Service
Parasite Dolls (for Bubblegum Crisis fans)
Rumiko Takahashi Tribute
Sakura Wars: The Movie
Scryed: Eps 1 & 2, Please Teacher Eps 1-3
Spirit of Wonder: Scientific Boys Club
Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat In Space
You're Under Arrest Eps 39, 49-51

See the AFI Silver Theater brochure, page 14...

http://www.afi.com/silver/afisilver.pdf

I'm guessing this is one of the only chances to watch some of this stuff state-side on the big screen, so get it while it's hot! Apparently, this lineup is a replay of an animefest put on in LA.

Last night, they had a pristine print of Lawrence of Arabia restored, including intermission--a very, very rare experience. It was the first time I had been at the theater, and there's no better way of getting a good impression. The art deco decour was nice too.

I don't think I've ever seen that for purchase in a video store. Is it worth picking up if I do?

--"Just wanted to let those in the DC area "

I am very happy to be able to say that I am not in the DC area.

However, there are some good movies on the list. The two Miyazaki's are always worth watching. I've been wanting to watch Tamala for a while now, I hear it's a real head trip (and part one of a trilogy).

Some of the other selections puzzle me. Scryed? Please Teacher? Why? And why those episodes of YUA?

--"I don't think I've ever seen that for purchase in a video store. "

You won't, even if you live in Japan. From what I've heard, it's a direct-purchase only, so you'd have to order it from the studio. It hasn't been released anywhere else yet.
That's what started the thread, though. It might get an R1 release if they get enough response. There should be more information about that coming out this weekend at Anime Expo. It's the biggest US anime convention, so there'll probably be a lot of news next week.
