So we accidentally turn on the news last night. Turns out, there's a serial rapist in our neighborhood. If it's not one goddamned thing it's another. Apparently many serial killers start out as serial rapists.

Then there was the serial rapist that stalked Lincoln Park while I was going to school at DePaul University. Don't know if they ever did catch the guy.

So are you ready for the description of the guy?

Black male
in his 20s or 30s
5'9" to 6'
may have dreadlocks.

They show suspects like that on the news all the time. I often wonder what it would be like to look like that, and worry about people reporting you.

My schoolmate used to get hassed by the CPD and DePaul campus security whenever a crime was reported. After a few years, we just accepted it as a running joke.

Um, no, that's not racial profiling at all. That's constructing a description of the person who probably committed the crime, based on witness reports.

So, if as I a cop, I see a black man ranging from 4 to 6 feet, that may or may not have dreads, I have a good reason to stop them, or question them... right!?

Man, they should just keep such a generic description of a suspect up all the time, and then they can never be slapped with RP again! Oh, wait they already do...

if they have a witness description that says someone saw a black guy, its not RP. Its RP when they stop blacks based on statistics, or no basis at all.

If the women who were raped say to the cops "The guy was black" what do you expect them to put in his description. It's a valid part of his appearence. They don't leave out his height, approximate age or hair style/colour, so why shouldn't they mention the colour of his skin.

It would be pretty dumb if they didn't mention that he was black and then people kept ringing up and tipping the police off about various white guys - it's a waste of everyone's time.

And FWIW I hate racial profiling, but this ain't it.
