Right now we only plan to send 1 warrior exploring. That is barely enough to scout our territory - we might miss the best site for our 2nd city. We also risk being rushed by the Aztecs if they are near us.
I propose we build another 1 or 2 warriors before our settler and granary. This will cost a few shields and food, but I think it is worth it. Knowledge is power, especially map knowledge. We may never explore the opposite end of our continent if we don't start early.
Whether we build 2 or 4 warriors, we will still finish the settler and granary by 2510BC. This is how more warriors will affect our economy*:
Current: 92 tiles explored
+1 Warrior: +80 tiles, x2 contact speed, -4 food, -11 shields
+2 Warriors: +152 tiles, x3 contact speed, -10 food, -22 shields
What do you think? Are 1 or 2 more warriors worth it?
*Here are my numbers if you want to check the math.
1 Explorer (Warrior,Warrior,Settler,Granary)
Explored: 23 moves
Camelot: 5 Pop, 16 Shields, Growth in 3 turns
2nd city: -0 turns of production
2 Explorers (Warrior,Warrior,Warrior,Settler,Granary)
Explored: 43 moves
Camelot: 5 Pop, 9 Shields, Growth in 3 turns
2nd city: -2 turns of production
3 Explorers (Warrior,Warrior,Warrior,Warrior,Settler,Granary)
Explored: 61 moves
Camelot: 4 Pop, 0 Shields, Growth in 1 and 4 turns
2nd city: -3 turns of production
I assume each explorer move reveals an average of 4 tiles, and our second city makes 2 food and 2 shields.

I think the earlier we found our 2nd city, the better. Each turn counts here, as the benefit is exponential. It won't much influence the time to build the granary, that's true, as by this time our production output will already be big. But our 2nd city has more time to grow and to get a 2nd center of production, and perhaps even a 2nd granary city, who knows. We seem to be on a nice patch of green land and have some hills in one direction, I bet from there we'll see a good location for our 2nd city instantly. It won't be more than 3 tiles away from our capital, anyway, we'd not have far to go to see it. Also keep in mind, that by 3450BC our borders expand and reveal another layer of tiles without scouting. We might see a viable 2nd site even then.
However, I concur, a few more warriors would be nice. We could build 2 more warriors in our capital after the settler is on his way. We'll have 2 mined bonus grasslands by this time, and 2 warriors cost only 4 turns and 8 food, which we could have had more if we had worked the wheat.

Since we are losing food anyway, I was thinking of taking it from the second city by building warriors before the settler. But 2 warriors between the settler and granary works too if that's what we agree on.
* DaveMcW consults the Book of Armaments
'First shalt thou shalt build warriors. Then, shalt thou send three exploring. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt send off, and the number of the explorers shall be three. Four shalt thou not send, nor either send thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out.'
