What's next? The 'Vicks' Vapor Rub Alanta Falcons?

Phillips clarifies Bank One agreement
By Larry Mayer
Senior Writer
June 25, 2003

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Bears President and CEO Ted Phillips issued a statement Wednesday in response to an article in Tuesday's editions of the Philadelphia Inquirer that erroneously indicated that the Bears had sold the name of their team to Bank One.

In a 12-year, multi-million deal announced earlier this week, Bank One will become the Bears' presenting partner beginning this season. That in no way means that the team will be known as anything but the Chicago Bears.

The newspaper issued a retraction Wednesday, reporting that the phrase "Bears football presented by Bank One" will "not supplant the name of the Chicago Bears and is not intended to do so."

"The Chicago Bears did not, and will never, sell the rights of our team name," Phillips said in his statement. "Our partnership with Bank One does not and will not change how the team is referred to in any fashion locally or nationally.

"An inaccurate newspaper report misrepresented our arrangement with Bank One. The paper printed a correction of the report and I will further clarify our relationship with Bank One.

"As the Bears' presenting sponsor, Bank One will enjoy a presence at Soldier Field, in addition to being the presenting sponsor for the team's community outreach projects and offseason events (Fan Convention, Draft Day Party, etc.). Creating an all-encompassing relationship is what makes the partnership between Bank One and the Bears unique."

Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

Being A diehard Bears Fan, I'm all for it.
I look at it that we sucked Bank One into throwing away 40 million dollars that part of may be used to help the team.
Heck, look in Europe. Some of their "football" teams actually have company names.
The Bears couldn't sell the naming rights to their new stadium, so this was the creative way to accomplish the same thing.

Got spare money?

Think of sponsor's for pool player's.
Bank One would be a good one.
Ride the rail with Amtrak, another.
The possibilities are seemingly endless.

True, but very very few - and I can't think of any successful ones who do. It's usually a way for crappy small-market teams to desperately raise some cash because they're so terrible they can't win any games ..... oh yeah - like the Bears.

There's a little Welsh soccer team called something like "Total Market Solutions" (that's not it, but it's similar).

Get a bigger avatar today!

I thought there was a team in the British Premier league also.

And as said, this was to get around their restriction of not being able to brand the new stadium.

And while the Bears have not been spectacular of late,
at least they have won something in my lifetime, unlike some other Storied Chicago Sports Franchises.

Nope. None of the 92 professional teams in the English league are named after a company. However, their shirts all have sponsors logos on, of course, and many of the new stadiums carry the name of a sponsor ("The Reebok Stadium" for instance).

Although when the leagues were first founded in the 19th century there were factory teams who carried the name of their company. AFAIK none of them survive today under the same name they had back then.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Correction, Q Cubed. Michael Vick is based in Atlanta.

Chicago had better sponsor possibilities.
I hope the rest of the team's put more thought into it.

Some Chicago Bear possible sponsors:

I haven't yet seen the new Soldier Field... Is it sweet? They should still make the away team dress in a trailor though

What about the Hamms bear?

Maybe now that they have a partner with money that can start buying some wins... god knows they need all the help they can get!

Go Niners!

sports teams in asia are pretty much all company teams. all the football and baseball teams in korea and japan are such and such:
Yomiuri Giants
Nippon Ham Fighters
Seibu Lions
Orix BlueWave
Samsung Lions
Kia Tigers
Hyundai Unicorns
SK Wyverns
Lotte Giants
LG Twins
Doosan Bears
Hanhwa Eagles
Samsung Blue Wings
Hyundai Horangi
Posco Steelers

all of them have home bases, so to speak, though.
