quote:
What vested interest? Doctors who perform abortions are under the same ethical and professional registration rules, as well as the same malpractice standards, as all other MDs in the same licensing jurisdiction.
|
Are they? First off, a girl who wants an abortion can consent for one even though she cannot consent for any other medical procedure. Abortion clinics, until recently, did not need to have the same standards of care required for emergency surgery simply because they are abortion clinics.
Secondly, most of our statistics regarding maternal mortality in the US come from two sources, the CDC and Planned Parenthood.
From the book I have in front of me:
"CDC reports combine maternal deaths by miscarriages and induced abortions into a single category and these combined numbers are accepted as accounting for all maternal deaths, even though demographic research recognises that there is a systematic underreporting."
For instance many maternal deaths from ectopic pregnancies and other causes are not recorded as related to abortion.
We cannot, just from the CDC numbers, tell how many deaths are due to abortion, because of the way they report maternal deaths.
Also, the CDC's official statistics for 1999 show 12 per cent fewer abortions than does the AGI, so there clearly is room for underreporting in the CDC's numbers.
The main source for the CDC's underreporting comes from the system, that works differently for abortions, than for most other medical procedures.
1. The doctor who performs the abortion often will not deal with the complications from abortion. There is no requirement for the other doctor to ask the patient if she has had an abortion, or that her symptoms are abortion related.
Therefore, if the patient dies in the care of another physician, it becomes very difficult to trace the cause to abortion.
