Decide my future for me! Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

The entire sixth form got told we should spend every waking moment of our lives from this point until October thinking about universities, courses, and endless personal statements. This was promptly followed by comments by the sixth form on how the head of year is a w@nker, complete with hand gestures.

However, why must I think about something as trivial as my future when I can have a load of virtual strangers offer me their uncaring and often cruel advice? I have shopping to do!

Listed below are the universities and courses I've looked at and what I see as their pros and cons. For now, we're going to work off of the assumption that I get the grades to get into all of them.... :

Edinburgh University : Biochemistry
So far, this is my top choice.
Pros: Excellent university with excellent career prospects nearby for when I graduate. From what I've been told and read, a great city that's big enough to be interesting but not so huge as to be isolating. Very beautiful city and is host to lots of festivals and cultural attractions. A stone's throw away from the Roslin Genetics Institute.
Cons: Far away and slightly difficult to get to. Kinda pricey.

University of East Anglia: Biochemistry or Biochemistry with a Year in Canada
Pros: Highly rated university. Chance to spend one year studying at University of Toronto on exchange. Lots of my friends are going there and it's on a campus, so we'll be in steady contact. Reasonable cost of living. Only an hour away from home.
Cons: Post-graduation job prospects in the region aren't nearly as nice as Edinburgh. Norwich has never struck me as the most exciting city. It's in Norfolk. My family are Ipswich Town supporters. Only an hour away from home.

University of Sussex: Biochemistry or Nanotechnology
Pros: Excellent university. Beautiful campus. Near Brighton, the gay capital of the UK. The only university I've seen who offer a degree in nanotechnology. Big and diverse city.
Cons: Pricey. I'd run out of cash in days. Nanotechnology, though tempting, sounds kinda made up from bits of other courses.

Whadda ya think?

Edinburgh for sure.

Why?

You list far and difficult to get to as a con, I would put that as a pro. No parents popping in, or visiting too often. Will also get you to somewhere different, get new experiences, meet new and different ppl. I would never of gone to school with my friends. We were so close knit that I really wouldn't of grown up as well if they were all around.

Also, why do you want to be so close to home? You put that as a pro and con for Anglia... Also, Toronto suks...

As for nanotech... ??? whatever, sounds like you would rather go into biochemistry.

Ask them to send a creature of shadow to skin an enemy, they're fine with that. Ask them to help you make an important decision and they never answer their prayers.

It's easier to get home during term time if it's close by. Then again, that means I may run into family. Also, I like Toronto, used to live there.

You mean they can't even go to the corner shop for a newspaper?

Ach! A dog could do better. You should get youself a better class of spiritual help.

Anyway, for your Uni Choice I would

a) Not have a clue, and therefore advise

b) Picking one at random and hoping for the best.

Or c) Don't go to Uni at all but enter the wonderful world of entertainment. Who knows, 20 years from now you could be a makeup artist who skillfully hides blemishes on aging talentless hasbeens.

Doesn't every university offer options to study abroad?

Maybe East Anglia has a standard exchange program for X students a year, but that doesn't mean the other unis can't get you in Toronto (or wherever) with a little effort.

So, go for Edinburgh.

Most graduates end up looking for work in the area around the university they graduated from. So I vote for Edinburgh.

Plus, I remember a billion years ago when I went to UCLA, we had an exchange program with Edinburgh. I'll bet it's still in place. So, instead of cold Toronto, you can come to sunny California.

Think Prince William is at St Andrews.

I'd go for Edinburgh as well, if just for the reputation of the place. Socially it is also very good from what i could gather when I went to visit some of my mates up there.

East Anglia... The campus is somewhere in the middle of nothing to be completely honest. They got a great sports center though, was real jealous when I played basketball there with Cambridge. As for job projects, you're not that far from Cambridge which is one of the main centres of biotech and other high tech industries.

Sussex.. If you're good enough to get into Edinburgh, then I'd almost say that Sussex is probably slightly below your standard. How do the offer compare? I'd think that edinburgh is probably AAB, and Sussex BBC or somthing along those lines. This means that you'll have more time for socialising, but a 2:1 from Edinburgh will be seen with similar or better views as a 1st from Sussex.

Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge) totally repelled me with their attitude. I'm not one to jump through the extra hoops of seperate forms, entrance exams, interviews with suits, and the rest.
