	Anyone using ichat AV? Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

Anyone using ichat AV? It's a free beta and seems to work OK for normal chat.

I can't use the video conferencing (no camera) but I wouldn't mind trying out the audio feature. Anyone else interested? I've linked my AIM profile on Apolyton, so if you're curious give it a go.

All you need is a microphone and a 56K modem. I think all the imacs have a microphone anyway.

While this will be great if I ever want to do video conferencing (finally, there's a prog for the Mac to do it! ) I hate iChat, so I don't use it.

Last time I tried even running this new AV version it wouldn't connect to my AIM account anyway.

For the record, Monolith94 and I tried out the audio chat last night. From my end it worked spectacularly well (although I think M had problems with my NZ accent ). In fact I'd go so far to say that it was better than a telephone.

Of course my computer is too slow to run video chat and I don't have a camera, but it is still pretty cool. Apparently it uses a standard called SIP which everyone is going to adopt.

Anyone who wants to give it a try has permission to pester me.

Actually, the problem wasn't with the accent, what i think was happening was that my voice was coming through Ag's speakers, and his microphone was picking up on it, so in combination with Ag's voice, I heard my own coming back at me. Which was annoying, so I guess it worked better from his end. I'm sure that's a problem that can be fixed though.

I concur. I was a little worried that it wouldn't work too well because I have my computer hooked up to my stereo, but it worked flawlessly. Got to hear mono's voice booming from the speakers!

BTW, does anyone know if there's a Windows program that can engage in audio conferencing with iChat? Seems like a good way to cut down on international phone bills while I'm overseas.

That's the plan anyway. You could save on phone bills by buying all your friends and family new imacs!

The only stumbler is that AOL has to be given permission to do video and audio chat. They are prohibited because of monopoly concerns, although I am sure the ban will be lifted because MSN and Yahoo are both doing it. Apparently MSN and AIM will be made compatible anyway, I hear.

They were found to be an IM monopoly some years back and are prohibited from leveraging it into audio and video.
