Hmm.... I think it's supposed to be used when other people making decisions about other people without consultation or even thought. Deciding fate, that sort of thing.
You're right, it is often used as an excuse as an argument... but then again, inventing medicine isn't these days isn't so much about keeping people alive as making money for shareholders in international drugs companies.

Interesting...presumably people who use the 'playing god' argument would argue that everyone's bodies belong to God...others might argue that they belong to their 'inhabitants'. |
I don't pretend to play God. I couldn't live up to his standards. I do, however, believe that we are all put here on this earth for a reason by GOD.
On the other hand, if I had an incurable disease and was suffering horrendously, would I consider euthenasia? Probably.

id say poor theology doesn't mix well with your logic .. good theology would support it.
I completely agree with your perplexed feelings regards to how some actions can be deemed against gods plan (if he's a perfect being, then not much of a plan is it ???)
but lets not fester on a debate about predestination (which would be a bit of a threadjack),.
I personally find the saying rather silly, if we assume the existance of God (otherwise the saying really is meaningless - and im sure many would support that angle) , then I guess it boils down to what you believe about that God, if he is not perfect, then why not play god .. if God is perfect, then why concern ourselves about it .. not much of a god, if he left a loaded gun (whatever science or practace that people make this accusation against) lying around.
but who knows, what if God intended on us evolving into Gods ???? now thats a thought.
The only sensible conclusion is (if you believe in a perfect God) is that an inperfect being, can never play God, and therefore this saying is useless.

The real presumption is that human beings believe that they are somehow privy to God's plan and act in extreme righteousness accordingly. As the saying goes, If God wants me to do a thing, let him tell me, not you.

Indeed. First, create imperfect beings, surround them with pitfalls and dangers and then give each group of people different instructions. Not exactly a recipe for success.

This is a Mormon belief. The extremely good get to rule over their own universe in the afterlife with their 27 wives.

If you don't assume perfection in you god, then the saying is perfectly valid.
