	I've done something bad to my computer. Got spare money?

Hello.

I downloaded divx and installed the codecs to get a video to play and now windows media player won't work. i've uninstalled the divx stuff but that hasn't helped. any suggestions.

try the divX player that comes with the codec, and for the rest use some 3 party player like Winamp...

i'd prefer if windows media player would work though. would anyone advise unistalling media player completly?

Are you sure those new codecs are unistalled completely?

Is the an error message from windows media player? Or does it simply do nothing? Perhaps it is not on all movie files?

Reinstalling WMP would work. What Divx codec did you used? 3.11 or some bundle.

You might like to install "zoom player" its free and is less heavy than WMP

Divx 2.11? pretty rare bird. Look at divx.org, or try to find things like Nimo codec pack. It might be safer.

So simply run installer of WMP 9 or 7.1 and your problems should be solved. Divx should work after reinstall of WMP. No need for uninstaling first it will renew intself
BTW I would run Spybot search and destroy first. You might have some ugly adware on your computer.

How did you try, in contorl panel, or did you download WMP9 from msft site, and try to install it on top? If you tried only one of those you might want to try the other...

download windows media player (e.g. here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/wi...oad/default.asp)

and install it

or you might try windowsupdate.microsoft.com (if you XP) there is a (security)patch to WMP9 I think, maybe that helps

Also you can try and find mplayer2.exe in your "Program Files\Windows Media Player" folder.

Short answer: who knows?

Windows is a very large, very complicated, and not very well written system. Various components interact in odd ways to produce inexplicable behaviours. For example, this morning, a friend of mine installed the Space Cadet pinball game on his Wintel box. It worked mostly, except for the flippers, which wouldn't go down once flipped up. A number of trial-and-errors later, it was found that turning off one of the programs in the system tray fixed it.

I'd say MS would be a better bet than Apolyton for a question like that...

I use to flip around between WMP, WinAMP, QT32 and DiVX - nowadays I just don't watch porn.

Maybe selecting Add/Remove program from the Settings menu? Does your Windows have this?
