TimexWatch has it right — Las Vegas faces more of threat from lack of water than anything else. The city is located in a desert and only thrives because it brings in water from othe places. LOTS of water from elsewhere. Take that away and you've got a metropolis with bleak future.

Anyone in general:
In Reno, we simply cannot compete with Vegas' gaming industry. It has taken a long time for "The Biggest Little City" to figure out what everyone - who was neither an elected official of the city nor in the gaming industry - already knew for decades. There has been a push in recent years to diversify the local economy into other industries. We have wonderful natural scenery surrounding the area. Right now there's a movement in progress to get one of the upcoming Winter Olympics to return to the Sierra Nevadas. Beyond Reno and Vegas, I have no idea what the rest of the state's communities are doing, but they were small and weak to begin with. Few of them ever relied on gaming to support their economies, instead relying on the mining industry, which for the most part is whithering away in most areas.

Nevada? "Lobbying power?" Hahahahahahahahahahaha...!!!

The gaming industry (re:Casinos) are a HUGE lobbying force in-state, but beyond that...pffft.

That's not entirely true. Las Vegas and Southern Nevada in general get 88% of their water from the Colorado River/Lake Mead.

What is the expansion like in Vegas? To ask a different way: is the growth of the city far out-pacing the means to support said growth? Up here in Reno, the city continues to expand, but the Truckee River and groundwater can only carry us so far, yet the City council continues to kowtow to developers in allowing them to continue to do as they please. ( <-Ack, bad grammar in that sentence. )

We've never had good access to water, yet the fact that Reno has water problems continues to baffle and astound our elected officials...for a few minutes, at least...right up until they overwhelmingly pass measures approving of more unsustainable growth in the Truckee Meadows.

well the water issue is a tricky one- it sounds like it is that way in Reno as well. Although the Truckee river is smaller- it doesn't really supply anything right? It just drains into the basin. I'm sure the environmentalists would not like you sucking the river dry.

We are allowed to take unlimited water until the lake (lake mead- which is supplied by the Colorado River- for any non-nevada readers) reaches a certain level. We haven't reached that level, but the lake has dropped by 70 feet. Drought condition in Western/Central Colorado and Utah haven't helped at all.

As of right now, our growth is unlimited essentually. I believe the average is still 4000 people a month moving to the Las Vegas area (though it was slower last spring because of the war and unemployment I suppose) Although we are loosely bound by lack of land. The BLM releases some every so often- so we don't actually run out of land to build. Although it won't be too long before the whole valley is built. Hell they want to put some houses by the air force base with extra insulation to try to quiet the sound of the fighters.

We face no water restrictions, but they are seriously thinking about raising water rates to try to curb water use. And of course they have been giving cash to people to convert their lawns to desert landscaping for a while now.

Casinos and golf courses (we have quite a few) don't take any heat because most of them have water recycling programs of some sort. They recycle grey water. So they face no water restrictions at all, but golf courses are required to use non potable water for watering.

I don't think anyone will take water conservation seriously at all until the lake does drop another 40 feet or so. I can't remember the exact foot level, but once we reach that, I believe we have to abide by the restrictions of the amount of water we take out of the Colorado. I think it is 200,000 acre feet or something. I'm not sure what the interval of that is.

LV will never die out. As long as they got the strip and all those casinos, it'll be very prosperous.

Atlantic City here in Jersey is also making big bucks, even though it is getting competition from Mohegan Bay casino in Connecticut. People from all over New York and Phily make trips down there to gamble and go on the boardwalk. Gambling brings in the big bucks, and everyone wants to go.

Gambling is screwing up Detroit big-time. The casinos are makin' money, but it's not really being put back in the city.

On top of that, foreclosures and other financial screwups are on the rise. I think Vegas will have this problem eventually- you can't gamble where you live.

Vegas isn't totally about gambling... it's about fantasy now. It is to adult entertainment what Disney World is for the kids. Gambling will still be their most important source of revenue... and people will continue to gamble... but more and more people are going just to see the sights, shows, and experience the fantasy that Vegas has to offer.

It's my number one vacation destination.

What I was saying was that the younger generation don't care much for the slots, or this simple entertainment, when they would much prefer to gamble via gaming, such as 1st person shooters, strategies such as Civilization, RTS's, etc. These games in the future would be better designed specifically for gambling of course.

I just don't see the new up coming generation getting excited from such entertainment anymore, and those who are still alive today who DO enjoy it, their generation will eventually die out, and therefor so will the massive Las Vegas, UNLESS Las Vegas became a gaming city, rather than a roulette, blackjack, slots, city.

I always play blackjack when I go to Vegas. I actualy ended up making like $100 in Blackjack last time I was there but then you spend $200 on the hotel, $100 of buffets, $150 on night clubs & drinks, etc... The casinos make all the money the give out back and then some.

How wrong you are . Most young people love to go to the casinos (my brother, or my fellow Law School mates). Who cares about computer games, the gambling is where it is at.

Yes, because the likely hood of meeting or at least seeing a hot peice of ass in a casino is a near certainity while the likely hood of doing the same while playing civ is so small it isn't even worth talking about.
