Las Vegas To Die Out? Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

I don't see casino's in the future - why? Coz there's no demand. Too many gaming people out there don't turn to slots, they turn to 3RD Person Shooter or some RTS. Slots doesn't interest them, and I don't see many casino goers of my generation, only my parents and their parents, what happens when the die?

I spose, if Las Vegas wants to survive, it will have to turn it's slot machines into PC's and build games specifically for gambling - kind of a cool idea actually.

What do you think?

most commmon people lack the necessary skills to do well in "real" games.

You'd have to live where I live to see the effect. Even young people game, though perhaps less than adults.

But slot machines are getting more and more sophisticated. Many games have graphics and such on them. Check out games like Texas Tee (or is it Tea?), and I think Addam's family as well. These are the specialty games. You can put in 45 coins a pop on those. 9 lines times 5 bet per line. It's really a digital form of a slot reel machine. But if you get a special win you can go into a bonus round that has better graphics.

You are forgetting that gambling in a casino is hugely more fun than gambling on a video screen...

Where's the "complimentaries" on PC gambling?

I'd say Vegas has a bright future... considering it has a virtual (pardon the pun) monopoly in casinos in the US.

Or has it? New Jersey, that the other place?

there are things that Vegas can offer that other cities cannot. Sexy shows, world class stirp clubs, brothels an hour away, illegal prostitution in nearly every casino bar.

While online gambling and Indian Casino's can bite into our total take, we still have stuff they don't.

Also here's the biggest reason.

Most people don't want to be nerds. They would rather go somewhere, than stay at home looking at a video screen. Hey I like to travel too. As long as there are things to do in my city, we will be just fine.

Here's an interesting stat. Supposedly, according to recent polls, only 17% of people who come to vegas gamble in the casinos

While I don't believe that number. I believe this is the same survey that said only 3% visit strip clubs in Las Vegas, and 5% visit museums in Las Vegas . That must be why we have museums opening up every few blocks, and the strip clubs are struggling to survive .

But what this poll shows, is that not all people come to Vegas to play slot machines. Some people like me, prefere the live action of table games- mainly Blackjack. Interestingly I think staring at a slot machine or video poker machine for hours is absurd- yet I stare at a screen for hours playing civ2 or Baldur's gate 2

Some people come just to see the shows I'd imagine.

Also we are one of the top spots in the country for conventions now. we easily surpass cities like LA now.

No they fully understood it I think. Just because video game replaces gaming that casino offers doesnt mean it will ever replace Gambling aspects...

Unless you're like me and bet on playing basketball, street fighter, who can eat pie of pizza the fastest, who can run to the laundry the fastest, who can manage to get slapped in the face more by the end of the day.. etc etc etc.

Theres nothign like thrill of possibly winning something.

Got spare money?

Oddly enough... my Unc in law living in Vancouver is a regional exec in (I believe) the biggest online gambling corporation servicing North America.

Now as he explained when staying here during the Christmas holidays - Nevada and other big rigs currently have congress (or whatever senate like group concerned) by a collar and chain as to make it illegal for credit card companies to bill to offshore gambling operations. The company, like many other dodging local taxes - is located in Antigua, and deals mostly in American football betting

In short, he argued that LV isn't going anywhere as long as they have lobbying power. Too bad, I'd like to see that city punched in the throat and burnt to the ground

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Sn00py :
I don't know if it works for Las Vegas, since it has more than casinos to attract tourists, but...
It seems that many casino clients are rather poor people who gamble in order to get money, and not to have fun. Of course, they don't attend blackjack tables, but rather slot machines. These ones are the most likely to be swayed by online gambling, and other ways to win and lose money more quickly and easily.
OTOH, there are casino clients who go there to have fun, with the added thrill of gaining or losing money. These people will continue to pour big bucks in casinos, and they'll make sure Las Vegas survives.

Slot machines don't make anyone money except for the rare jackpot winner. They're set to pay out a certain percentage of the time, so it's only a matter of when you'll get paid out. If you want to make money, play poker or something else that involves skill...

I also don't see Las Vegas dying from casinos dying out. I do, however, see it whithering if the water demand outstrips the supply. Nothing to drink makes people quite crankyy ...

hey! some of us live there.

Our lobbying power doesn't go past state lines, trust me. When you only have 5 electoral votes, no one gives a **** about what you say.

Hell John MCCain has been trying to shut down sports betting on college sports.

Everyone hates us. We have no lobbying power. Our power does not extend past state lines.

Hell, we were the target of a planned terrorist attack in Detroit- yet the federal goverment doesn't consider Las Vegas a terrorist target. Those damn right wingers don't give a **** if our whole city is wiped off the face of the planet.

hey, long as we can import alcoholic drinks, we'll be Okay.

The drought is hitting us hard. Our lake has dropped by over 70 feet . They are probably going to raise water rates to try to force people to conserve. I hate to pay more for the same water, but oh well.
