ISDG Rules Poll at 1BC: Rule #5 Enter the AD-FREE zone

How do we vote on this proposal?
quote:

Here we go again! Okay, the voting rules will be the same on these polls as they were on the previous. Only a team captain or a recognized official from each civ may vote. Yes/No, Yea/Nay, whatever as long as there is no doubt about your vote.

We will still need 2/3rds, or in this case 6 of 8 positive votes. A team may post an abstain if they don't wish to vote. If this is the case, the abstain will not be counted as a NO vote. The poll will need 2/3rds of the non-abstain votes to pass. I would urge any team that does not wish to vote to abstain so that we know that your team has been spoken for.

Here is the rule addition in question:

5.At the beginning of each age/era for a team, the team will be granted an additional hour per turn to make their gameplay decisions. To recieve the additional hour, the team must post about their age advancement in the UN forum or contact the current keeper of the counter. This does not have to be done until the team is ready for the rest of the world to know of their advancement.

No. I think communicating (for whatever reason) this kind of info to civs that one does not know yet would be against the spirit of the game.

WAY against the spirit of the game.

Got spare money?

I think it's so that teams with a Scientific civ can have some time to discuss their strategy in response to seeing which tech they were randomly granted. It's sort of hard to plan what you're going to do in case of Steam Power, then have to change all that when you realise you got Nationalism instead.

Still, the non-Scientific teams could not care less, so I still think this proposal is pretty stupid (for all the reasons stated above).

-shrug- I voted yes, but I sort of assumed they would just tell a non-involved party (keeper of the counter) about the advancement and not every team. If its something that every team is going to be informed of, then Id change my vote to no until everyone has diplomatic contact with everyone else at least.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Since the team enters a new age gets a free hour, then the other teams would know that they entered a new age for getting that free hour (free hours just don't appear out of no where, ya know).

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Too be fair...

First off, anyone in contact with you can tell when you have gone forward an age. Furthermore, there will most likely not be any age advances prior to everyone being in contact with each other, or the seas crossed by at least one civ. That bit about reporting is a bit of a red herring.

The bit about the extra hour per turn is not. The bigger we get, the more time it will take any player to do turns that come up to our standards of accuracy and reporting. Now, when a war breaks out... 24 hours is not uncommon when a team finds itself in a pickle.

My fear is that it will be too little for a civ that finds itself the focus of much action over the course of the game, especially when combined with the penalties of falling to 0, but that is another thread.

"This does not have to be done until the team is ready for the rest of the world to know of their advancement" = that means if we don't need the extra hour, we don't have to inform anyone of our advancement.

"At the beginning of each age/era for a team, the team will be granted an additional hour per turn to make their gameplay decisions" - I presume that means for Middle Ages, we get 25 hrs. For Industrial Age, 26 hrs and so on. That does not sound a lot to me.

Do correct me if I am wrong. Otherwise it's a NO again.

rush brings up a point I think some people may have missed: it's an hour per turn, not just one single hour for the turn in which you enter the new era.

Not a big help, but I don't really see a reason not to vote for this. The time limit probably will need to be extended by the time we reach the Industrial age.

No offense to guys at 1BC.. but Ive posted there before and they are not the same caliber of the poly folks.

Why not redo the timecounter whenever team feels its not enough? Team can always request for new deadline rules etc. why relate any of this to age?

Put an end to popups!

I like this rule, and have yet to see a real reason against it. I vote yes, as long as it is clear that other teams need not know about the hours extension. This can of course be done by passing on the request to someone neutral who does not reveal this info to any other team.

As to nye's concern, that is certainly something we will need to deal with, but we can't really judge on that until it happens. This is perhaps another reason why we want the turn penalty rule, as an incentive for teams to announce where they can't play within their allotted time and why not. If several teams are having this problem, it is clear that we would need to consider more time allowed. At present such teams are the exception, not the rule, and have not presented any reasons for the delays. Not even having a valid reason shows a lack of regard for everyone else involved.

Two civs have hit zero so far. Firaxis (due to chaos in the workplace and deadlines) and CDG (due to chaos in the civ and a fierce debate over whether to attack GCA or not).

I am assuming the reasons for long delays that resulted in them hitting zero. I am entirely accurate that they have both hit zero. The French, the Germans, and CFC are all near the starting 100 hours. A good crisis and each of them will hit zero as well.

When this game started, as was the case with the PTW DG, we set time at 4 hours on a clock to encourage, not to punish. We set 24 hours as a deadline. In fact, the 4 hour figure was never set by any of the teams. It was picked out of the air by Borc with the first counter and continued by him into this game. Now, we see that those impatient, who admitedly have been inconvenienced, are trying to stretch a guideline into an instrument of discipline. I have never fancied such things.

I agree nye.

I set these polls for 5 days, so we have less than 24 hours till they are locked.

It looks like 1,2,3,5 is "no" and 4 is "yes"; but I'll let the polls time out before reporting to 1BC.

I'd say no on this poll.

But perhaps on a certain date, the 24 hour sugested time limit could be increased for everyone, and peroidcaly increased as teams get larger empires.

Or perhaps every team could be granted a one time 100 hours to their time clock.
