UNESCO awards Tel Aviv World Heritage site status! Inflate your Upload Space

http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/p...14409&sw=UNESCO

quote:
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization on Thursday awarded the city
of Tel Aviv-Jaffa the status of a site of world
heritage, for its historical urban buildings in
the Bauhaus style.

The buildings, built in the
1930s and named by the "White
City" organization, put Tel
Aviv on a list of just seven
cities to receive the award,
among them the Brazilian
capital of Brasilia.

The award brings with it
opportunities for increased

tourism to the city, which already operates a
walking tour of Bauhaus buildings; a spokesman
for Tel Aviv municipality said that the
decision could be worth as much as NIS 32
million in added revenue.

Tel Aviv's older areas were mainly designed in
the 1920s by Scottish city planner Sir Patrick
Geddes. In 1925, Geddes drew up a master plan
for the city - which at the time had a
population of some 25,000 - and showed his
concept of a large garden city of about 100,000
residents.

The scheme, which received final official
approval in 1929, was the first and only master
plan to be approved for the coastal city.

The 21-nation World Heritage Committee includes
representatives from Lebanon, Egypt, the United
Kingdom and Russia.

Thanks, UN!

Oh, and Spiffor, if you say that they all look the same, I've got a couple of pics from downtown hive Paris to show you.

Ah... what a lonely little thread...

World Heritage site? For 1930s architecture?

I'd say Tel Aviv jumped the queue somewhat.

Tired of ads?

It has to be pointed out that it is indeed a very fine testament of that architecture, with lots of houses concentrated in TA.

oh, and thanks for the Sympathy bump.

Well... I gues 1930s architecture is pretty rare in Europe, so that could be part of it.

Obviously, since the UN hates Israel and seeks only to do it harm, this is just a way to encourage more Arabs to go into Israel and thus dillute it form the inside!

You should see the apartment buildings in Israel, they're less flats and more shacks with multiple stories.
Azazel, either there is some humour that is way above me, or the answer to your question is that he's referring to the 3rd picture, which does look quite prison-like.

Azazel, not anymore, I took care of it . Come on, don't get pissed off.. besides, scandinavian (even if we're not scandinavian) prisons are luxurious compared to any other prisons, excluding few older prisons meant to hold some of the more dangerous individuals.

Ok, I'll cheer you up. Want to hear something screwed up from out country? You remember the newly elected politician, Tony Halme, the huge guy whose face Stefu uses as avatar? Former bodyguard (in US) and wrestling star (in US too) known for his huge muscles and controversial opinions? Well, just yesterday he fired his gun, that he doesn't have permits (therefore being illegal firearm) in his apartment, supposedly accidentally. He had been drinking all day long and day ended like that. Heavily armed cops assaulted the house soon after, and found the champ there, and instead of shooting first, they had to give him oxigine mask and rush to hospital. He had been partying a little . Good publicity. Oh yeah.. he was so messed up that even to this moment he hasn't been able to be questioned. All they know is that supposedly he didn't try to shoot his wife, and that he was in life threatening situation because of 'little partying' and it is not confirmed what other substances has been found from his apartment (not necessarily anything illegal though). So, there you go. I hope that cheered you up .

So, Bush is just a big ***** compared to our super politicians.

Azazel, and I like the second building. I think the first one is rather boring and typical looking office building, second one is interesting and pretty cool, and I don't know what to think about the third one, I'm still undecided. It's kind of retrofuturistic..

I don't know... Something warm and cozy if you know what I mean. Bauhaus is a unique style but I find it rather sterile and cold.

I can not understand how any tourist would want to visit a Bauhaus building. I cannot even athom the idea of a tourist saying:
"Tonight, Darling, I've got a surprise for you. We are going to the airport, and taking the plane straight to Tel Aviv's Bauhaus heaven"

Besides, I can't understand how anybody would want to conserve Bauhaus building. Better to destroy them and replace them with something interesting

And Az, I know Paris' ordinary buildings look all the same (heck, they were designed to be so). I don't think they should be conserved at all costs. However, they sure shouldn't be replaced by these horrors
