MOO 2 v GalCiv Enter the AD-FREE zone

I hate these "suchandsuch" v "soandso" threads, but...

I am looking for a new game. I have played Moo3, and despite intitially not enjoying the experience, I have now began to understand and enjoy the game.

All the while I have been hearing how much better Gal Civ is. "Civ in Space" many have called it. Now Civ in space was always MOO2, and many people have also said GalCiv was how Moo3 should have been.

Now my question is, how does Gal Civ compare to Moo2, being that they must be quite similar? Is Gal Civ the superior game?

Moo2:
+ you can design your own ships
+ tactical combat
- really boring and annoying micromanagement

Galciv:
+ smart AI opponents
+ fast paced gameplay
+ patches make the game better and better
- no multiplayer

I clearly prefer Galciv. Besides some bugs, that are quite likely to be fixed in the future, I see no real downfalls in the game. The lack of multiplayer however could be a reason to prefer something else but it definetly is the best singleplayer TBS.

GalCiv
+- Very important random events
+- No micromanagement
+ Good research tree
- No mysterious techs (like antarian Xentropium armor in Moo2)
+ Complicated starbases
- Can not be downloaded for a free from some abandonware sites.

Suffering from ads?

Moo2:

+ Still played after many years

GalCiv:

- More patches than SE IV (in less time even)
- Players already jumping ship, talking wistfully about Moo3 of all things.

Truce?

I am what could be called a "casually hardcore" player. By which I mean that, while I do not devise elaborate plans of attack for a game, delve too deeply into the minutae, or immediately begin the process of ratcheting up the difficulty settings in a game upon purchasing it, I do play a lot of games and I am very educated in the TBS genre as a whole and Civ-style games in particular.

Given this, I can understand why some folks have put GalCiv aside lately. It is pretty simple, in a way. I put it aside as well, due to time constraints and a lack of "must play right now!" feel with it. I put MoO3 aside quicker, however.

I revisited both games recently, and while MoO3 (even post-patch) did nothing for me again, GalCiv has been great fun. In fact, I had one of my best sessions yet last night, and I got that old "one more turn" feel.

Now...MoO2 vs. GalCiv is a tough question, for many of the reasons listed above. In my very humble opinion, GalCiv would not replace MoO2 on the harddrive. MoO2 is one of the best games I've ever played, and I still play it regularly. However, GalCiv is a pretty darn good game and of every MoO2 wannabe out there, it is the best.

Mind you, my opinion may be invalid, given that I dislike Civ3 a lot.

I played Moo2 longer and more fervently than GalCiv so it gets my vote.

Well...

On the MOO2 side, I really think you are liking it more then it actual worth for the fact: It was a first experience, it was very uber, but time evolved.

The AI is good in GalCiv, but they must find a "balancing" thing to keep the game fun, I find it to be to fast to know who win. 90% of the game I know if I win after the initial spread, kinda pointless to go on after.

Don`t read me wrong: MOO2 was very nice for the time it was release. A lot of peoples love what they know, but it didn`t stand the road anymore then MOO1 would stand it compare to the 2. :P

They really should add tactical combat to GalCiv althought, and spread more differences that are easy to see and understand, the Arcean or the Torian could, for exemple, have much stronger starbases but 1 drawback on the offensive side...anyway, just a thought.

That been said, at the time, MOO2 was the best game out there...if players don`t keep playing GalCiv like they use to play MOO2 it is just that they are growing older and grumpier. I know teens that will not stop playing it...:P

Let face it, we are "has been"! :P

*giggles*

It would be interesting to compare relative times spent playing Galciv to MOO III to impressions of each game.

Example:

Galciv- people who play it for 3 weeks think it's better
MOO III- people who play if for 3 months like it better.

---
I'd like to rate the two, but I've only played Galciv
But the statistical analysis of the two groups might prove interesting...

I played MOO3 for two months and GalCiv for two months. I liked GalCiv better. I haven't tried MOO3 with all the latest patches but I don't know if they can patch the unweildy feeling the game has towards the end.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

MOO3 -- 3.0/5.0 at release but improving greatly with patch 1.2.5, though still often a frustrating and perplexing experience. I want MOO3 to be better and hope that Atari will continue to finance support and further patches.

MOO2 -- 5.0/5.0 always rewarding and fun to play as far as it goes and for what it is -- it is an old program no longer supported that has aged gracefully. It has a permanent home on my disk. I love MOO2 like I love StarCraft, 'nuff said.

Galciv -- 4.0/5.0 fun to play now and again though I personally find starbases tedious and the graphic cut scenes are too repetitious; perhaps the soon to be released free expansion pack will make it the clear winner. Galciv has an exciting, expansive, and very energetic future; I am not so sure that MOO3 will get any further funding from Atari beyond patch 1.2.5.
