You know a game has good music when you read something like:

PDF manuals! I ****ing hate them!

Corollary, no paper manual and NO tutorial... so you want me to screw up in a game that counts simply to learn the game? Great...

I seem to be the only person who likes the civ3 modern era music

I have weird musical tastes.

The music for recent rpg's hasn't impressed me.

I do like games where you can bring in your own mp3's.

PDF manuals are okay, but I much rather they do it the way like Alpha Centauri or with compiled HTML. This way, you can look up terms and go back and forth. Sure, you can link in PDF documents, but you can't go back.

I like Simearth too, but ever since I got my new computer the Geology model has been acting up. in the precambrian (geologic time scale) whole chunks of a landmass would dissapear suddenly and be replaced with a bunch of one-tile islands. it seems to be a bug the the plate tectonics engine because it doesn't happen when I turn continental drift off. Has anyone else have this problem?

PDF manuals that you need to refer to when playing, resulting in Alt-Tabbing breaking the atmosphere (especially when Alt-Tab doesn't work properly).

Games that crash just as they autosave, corrupting the file.

Cynical cash ins: GarbageTruk Tycoon (EGA)

Cynical cross-genre cash-ins: Civilization Overlord 3D Attack the FPS!

College student project models relabelled as games: Sim Train Timetable!

Games that selectively misquote reviews on their packaging: "As good as Baldur's Gate! PCCaper" from "even with a million years more development time the syphalitic monkeys responsible for this piece of excrement could never come close to making it as good as Baldur's Gate!"

HOMM4 had this problem. The Multiplayer button on the menu did nothing but produce a pop-up saying "Please wait for the multiplayer patch" or something.
IIRC it only took them 6 months to bring it out. I'd stopped caring long before then.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Yes it is...

And the story gets worse... About a year after the release of that game, they stopped all work on it, and announced a "Brand new game"... This game had a different name, but the tag line for that game, was exactly the same line, they used for the old game...
Haven't kept up with the story, don't know if it has been cancelled or not... Haven't heard anything about it, so I guess it is...

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

quote:
I simply can't stand magic (unless it only comes "in small doses") in games, but still there's new "magic games" released every now and then... If some game company releases an RPG game, there's 99% risk, for that game to include magic... way too much magic...

I hate magic too. It ruins the best of games.

quote:
Oh, music is important... that means: It's important to have a switch to turn OFF music in games... if you can't turn it off, the game is 99% certain that it'll be deleted within very short time...

I totaly agree with this too. One example of an x-box game that could use an off switch for music is Jet Set Radio Future, its a decent game but the music just ruins any chance of my completing it.

lets see things I hate....
1. AI that obviously cheats. lets face it if the AI never cheated then there would be no challange.

2. No reward for winning. ie games that end with a simple screen saying you won.

3. Games that advertise to be the best new game on the market, with new innovative ai that can whip any human player. But when you get them you find the ai to be laughable. They quickly end up in the old game pile.
A good example of this is the Axis&Allies computer game which has such good AI that even the best of player will have trouble. I've taken over Japan and Germany as Russia with little to no help from the other allies, and Im a mediocre A&A player.

4. Games that are clones of other games

5. Games that trade off a good story line for good graphics, game developer still havent learned that graphics may be what sells the first game, but its the story line that keeps 'em coming back for the sequel.

That's not true. There are various ways of making AI's so they don't have to cheat yet remain competent. I think Galatic Civilizations did a decent job.

A lot of game magazines review all games with a heavy dose of their particular bias even when they try not to. For instance I always feel PC Gamer (Uk) will score RPG's and strategy games more on interface acclimatisation, coolness and look and feel rather than balance, longevity or mid to late gameplay problems.

It's impossible to account for those things when you have maybe two weeks between the time you receive the review-code and the publication deadline.

Besides, anyone who can't tell the difference between a "Good Game" and a "Bad Game" after maybe 10 hours of playing has no business writing a review in the first place. The various shades of grey in between will always be up to the preference of each individual player.

Supposedly, Games Domain will only allow you to write a review after a minimum of 50 hours of playing time.

That's good.
