JohnT and Tuome got it. Actually I first saw it appear in one of our AC fiction discussion threads for Beyond Alpha Centauri. It's commonplace there since there are big long posts that cover several different plotlines and it's simpler when reading to catch up the plotline you are involved in. So that when one skims through the thread, he can ignore the discussion not directed at him and concentrate on the things important to him. Then, I guess, it migrated to the OTF when Frankychan or someone else from the story 'crew' started to post here and used the bolding. Properly used it's quite effective, methinks.

Not that much easier. Most people can scan normal text for certain words and phrases without emphasis. In fact, undue uses of emphases disrupt the normal flow. It's a poor practice.

Bold is useful when quoting someone: Asher wrote, that he thinks he's one of the most quoted Apolytoners in sigs, after Fez.

Of course, all this is pretty unnecessary since we have the very nice QUOTE function.
