Bolding people's names in threads Inflate your Upload Space

This is becoming more and more popular, probably from the StraightDope or something, but I find it really silly. I know what it's for, so people can see their name stand out and know when they're being talked to, but to me I always associate bold with being...well, bold. Emphasized.

So when I read stuff like:
"Oh, I don't know JohnT, I think I could marry that kitty," I read it as someone talking normally, then shouting "JohnT", then resuming speaking normally again. It seems a bit dysfunctional.

Just thought I'd share.
Anyone else the same way?

to me it sounds, like the name of the reciever is supposed to add value to the poster's arguement.

Generally, it sucks.

How is SDMB anyway?

Why don't people just write everything in bold and only switch when they mention someone? What do you say Asher. That would be rather kewl too. Why is this such a big deal?

i know a lot of times i just rush through a thread until I notice "Speer", "Albert", or "AS"... most people here probably do the same and everybody knows it so why not make sure someone doesn't glaze over their name by bolding it.

I find it strange too. I am always in the impression that people yell the other's name, which makes controversial debates look more controversial.

I prefer to adress the other people by singling their name out in a line.
(example

"Asher:
I find it strange too. I am always in the impression that people yell the other's name, which makes controversial debates look more controversial.")

I posted a thread about this like a year ago. It's annoying, but not because of the shouting... It's because of the emphasis. It's so accusatory, like a detective at the end of a crap crime novel pointing the finger at the suspects one by one. Is it not true, Mrs. Bloomsbury, that you lied about being in bed the whole time?

Eh, I kind of like it. It clarifies to whom you are talking, and, for people perusing the threads, it makes it easier to look for people who actually replied to your post.

So, deal with it Asher. And you too, Buck.

If you're browsing a thread, which contains a lot of information not important to you, but on the other hand you've posted something in it and are wondering if someone has made a response to you, it's helpful to notice your name bolded in the start of the line.

Asher -- > A good example of this is the ST, where Spiffor has asked the longest word in the Finnish language. However, bolding people's names in the middle of the line, Asher, doesn't usually work, since it actually doesn't catch anyones attention as efficiently as the bold in the start of the line...

It reminds me of how gossip columnists like Liz Smith like to drop names like Jesse Jackson throughout her column for apparantly no James Carville reason.

It reminds me of Steve Gibson's writing style which is insanely obnoxious.
