Now this is getting patriotic and emotional...
Of course we have a navy. panag just demonstrated it.
For the last G8 on the Lake of Geneva, the Swiss government wanted to lease the Theodore Roosvelt, but the Americans informed us that it was already busy in the Gulf. Then they offered the Carl Vinson but the French authorities refused permission for the ship to sail the Rhone from Marseille to Geneva. As to prevent a diplomatic incident, and for obvious marketing reasons, since Switzerland plans to boost his 3-lakes battlefleets (Geneva, Constance, 4-Cantons), they offered the Charles de Gaulle.
Unfortunately for them, their offer was turned down since our FA-18 could not land on it.

You should really pay attention to your history lessons...

Hmmmm. That's probably my fault -- might have missed that with the copywriters when we were handing out short summaries of the various Conquests to the press. As you can read in the GameSpot preview, the MesoAmerican scenario is focused on culture (though you can always win by eliminating all the other opponents).

Enjoy!

The Mayans were earlier in history than both the Aztecs and the Incans, who only lasted for about 100-300 years and never fought.

Also, there are plenty of crackpot conspiracy theories about the Mayans, but I'm sure Firaxis won't include those in the scenario.

May never have posted, but quite frequently lurking.

And apologies for never having posted before. Problem was due to a technical difficulty on my end... what I used to call an "eye-dee-ten-tee" problem, once upon a time. (I.D.10.T.) I would try to post, be given an error message, and just tell myself I'd figure it out later. Then I realized today that I never confirmed my registration. Duh.

We just got back from the first leg of our press tour yesterday, and GameSpot was the first to post a preview. So naturally I'm on the forums more this week, reading your reactions, praise, damnations, and occasional trolling.

Best,

Bolivia did at one time have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean. From a website:

Some of these Bolivian dictators involved themselves in the internal struggles of Peru (in which Chile also intervened), while others struggled to prevent the annexation of Bolivia by Peru. The position of Bolivia's boundaries was uncertain and subject to conflict. However, Bolivian territory extended to the Pacific and included most of the coast of the Atacama desert and the port of Antofagasta. The discovery of rich nitrate deposits in the Atacama desert and rising border tensions led the outbreak of war betweeen Chile and Bolivia (1879-1883), in which Peru participated on the side of Bolivia. Chile's victory in this war resulted in Bolivia's loss of its outlet to the Pacific. Efforts, mainly political, to regain some outlet to the sea failed. The railway which linked Bolivia with the Pacific coast (Oruro-Antofagasta) was inaugurated in 1892.

Believe it or not it was an honor back then to be sacrificed.

If you are familiar with the ball game the Mayans used to play (kind of a wierd mix between football and basketball) the captain in the winning team was the one lucky enough to be sacrificed to the gods...

so, being intrinsically linked to even sporting events, ritual sacrifice IMO does count as a cultural issue.

It certainly was - for some. At least it was considered honorable by those who were not sacrificed. But still, those sacrificed were the losers in battle. But they went to the Warrior's paradise, that's for sure.

That's a hoax AFAIK. It's generally agreed that the losers got sacrificed. And often, the game was sports and people lost considerable sums in biddings, or so report the croniclers. But that was in later times of course, when the religious component slowly faded away. Doubtlessly though, not at every game there was a sacrifice, the players wouldn't become very good in the game that way. But by pictorial evidence it's clear that the game was especially religious and also connected to fertility gods. (In some illustrations the blood that squirts out of the victim transforms into vegetation).

Oh, and the game was played all over Mesoamerica, not only among the Mayans. But the best evidence we have of the religious importance is about the classical Mayans.
