	Tech: Processor Temperature? Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

I'm hoping some of the cool tech gurus can help, my knowledge has run out...

I have an A7N8X deluxe mobo (ASUS) with an athlon 2700+. It's underclocked () because the computer becomes horribly unstable when I set the Outside Frequency in the BIOS to the correct value.

I'm working on that problem right now (suggestions would be great...). What really scares me is that the processor is running at about 100-114 degrees F. Is this normal? The AMD has some undecipherable tables, and a google search turned up nothing.

To me that doesn't sound horribly high. Don't take my word as an advice though, someone should back me up with this. But that sounds almost normal?

I'm also on an Asus mobo and my CPU runs at 60-69 Celsius (~150 F). I think the thermal compound between the CPU core and the heat sink was incorrectly applied, or maybe it just sucks

You may have the same problem. Try re-applying some new thermal compound - you can probably get some from a local store for less than $5.

I was just reading along somwhere, people were mentioning 70-80 degree temps, probably just some damn supercoolers

If it was celsius, you should start to worry... Can't say I know what the threshold is for your proccesor, but my old P3 500 got to ~90 celsius and survived.

Tell me if you find it... I have a A7N8X and have not been able to find it, either. I'm told that it is beside the printed ASUS logo on the motherboard, but I did not see it anywhere.

Isn't that only around 46C? If so, that's cool. Mine runs around 53-56 and I'd like to lower that a bit more. With the OEM stuff it ran around 65 which I thought was way too hot!

So I'm not the only one? I read the same thing, near the ASUS logo it said, nothing there! Well, at least I know I'm not going blind .

Is it just me or is ASUS support crappy? Their help forum has said "Closed" for months, "PBC Revision" is not found in the KB, e-mail support hidden, etc...

Garth: Right now it's at 52 degrees celcius (processor, according to ASUS Probe), but that's probably because it's been running NWN for 5 hours and I don't have air conditioning. Normal temp is around 47/48 degrees C.

when i first applied thermal compound i applied way too much and was around 55C. i scraped some off and left a thin layer. now i run around 45C.

46°C? That's probably nothing, unless the ambient temperature is something like 10°C.

It´s winter around 13°C . I´m just using the same thing it came with, no upgrades or anything .
In summer goes up to 50°C sometimes and becomes unstable .

I went through this a few years ago with a chip that was becoming unstable in the daytime and was running about 75C. Is that too hot I wondered? The best advice I could find was, "if you touch it and you burn yourself it's too hot". I did, and it was. Optimum temps are as low as you can get em. Get a better fan and cool that sucker down so it runs at 50C at full throttle.

By the time I had all the parts, I just wanted to put the thing together. I just used the OEM fan that was in the case. I'm looking for a good QUIET fan, but I'll probably need a new power supply first (current one might have problems, only 300w).

Any suggestions for fan and PS?

I think the standard answer is that 300W should be OK as long as you're not running too many devices. How many devices is that ? On one machine, I run two HD, two CD-R drives (one SCSI) and a USB smart card reader on 250W.

As for the fan, you may not have too much choice about quiet, the biggest question is how well they cool and whether they will fit on the MB (not just the CPU) heres a site that'll give you some ideas about the possible choices.
