Recommend a playstation 2 game Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

We have just bought a PS2 in our dorm room kitchen! Now we just need to buy at least one game...

So I need your recommendations. Preferably it should be interesting for onlookers as well as players.

I remember I read somewhere about a collection of small games, but I don't remember the name and I can't seem to find it by google. Do anyone have a clue what game I am talking about ?

Thanks

Final Fantasy X

Save return to castle wolfenstein for your computer... FPS suck on consoles.
Devil May Cry is amazing too.

Silent Hill 3 will be out in August its a must have.

Get games that are a few month old and you will save a ton of money. Greatest Hits games are always a good choice.

I have never played anything on the PSX2, but deffinately do not get a Final Fantasy game, they are the worst choice you could make for a jointly owned console.

Well, it depends on your tastes. Unfortunately, most straight strategy games on consoles are pretty bad, so one obvious genre of suggestions considering the site we're on is gone.

RPG-wise, if you like them (try them out on an SNES emulator first, if you want), definitely try Final Fantasy X. Also recommended is Xenosaga & Suikoden III. Wild ARMs 3 & Shadow Hearts are pretty decent too, and should be able to be found cheaply.

More action-wise, Devil May Cry is awesome, if difficult. Avoid the sequel if at all possible, though. For something more sneaky, Metal Gear Solid 2 has some awesome gameplay at first... but is sadly short, and while the plot has good potential, people need to be kicked for how pretentious it is towards the end. Still quality, though.

Hmm, a communal PS2... for some Diablo style cooperative hack-up, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is fun. And combat racing games are really not my thing, but I admit enjoying at least some of Twisted Metal: Black (which was a launch title, and should be dirt cheap by now).

If you're looking for a game involving criminal driving, GTA is the obvious choice, but for a more realistic (still not very, but certainly closer) take that actually has a good plot, try The Getaway. The map of London they use is accurate, too! Apperantly real-world driving experience there will actually help you navigate.

Then of course there's a vast stable of PS1 games. Vast, vast, vast. I will mention one game though, as the PS1 is the only place you'll find good strategy games as it stands, albeit they're Strat-RPGs: pick up Final Fantasy Tactics for a very fun & challenging time.

FF X is a good game but I would never get it for a communal shared console. Takes a lot of time to play and is strictly single-player. I can't really think of an RPG or a strategy game that would be good for such a console. I'd recommend driving and fighting games instead, many good titles endorsed here already.

Like SnowFire said, you shouldn't dismiss PS1 games entirely, there are good solid ones there that are inexpensive to top it off.

Well, my roommates had only 1 PS2 between us, and did fine playing lots of long single-player RPGs. You can only play so much at once, you know. During homework-light weeks, we'd just have the darn thing running 16 hours out of 24. That's two fanatics playing 6 hours of the latest RPG and the other squeezing in 4 hours himself.

During hectic work times, it's even easier to schedule- instead of just waiting for the other person to be done, you grab the empty TV and play.

Not to say that we didn't do multiplayer as well (hurray for Smash Brothers!), but they can coexist.

yeah. the only rpg that i would not suggest for a shared console is Xenosaga, simply because the longest cutscene in that tops 45 minutes.

i still stand by dynasty warriors 4, because it's a very fun hack-and-slash action game set during the three kingdoms period in china. two players, to boot.

Second MikeH.

GTA III : Vice City was above average in PC, so I'd guess it's fairly good in PS2, too (wasn't it originally made to console, anyway?)

SSX, the snowboarding game which was one of the first games for PS2? I've heard that it was the best game during the few first months after the release of PS2, but never tried it.

I'd go with GTA3, if you want to buy just one game.
