TRL is an example of how NOT to make a war movie. Besides being boring, the "philosophy" and "thinking" you mention was ridiculously shallow.

The bootcamp scenes: the rest of the movie is forgettable.

Enemy at the gates is complete, pure and total sh!t. It's so inaccurate, so stupid. It's not a historical movie, it's just a piece of crap made by director who have no idea about WW2 and about Soviet Union. Trust me, this movie is full of small details that make it ridiculous for any Russian who watch it. Such as file holders on Khrushev's bookcase that appeared in Russia only after collapse of USSR.

And if you could check all the 1968 reviews for 2001, i doubt you would get Fresh:

when i saw Cloonet come on screen as the new captain, I thought, "Oh God no! Another hour of this dreck!", but thankfully his part was as short as that of Travolta.

The battle scenes were tacky, the inner dialogue slow, winded, and unrealisitc, and overall, blah.

Of course, movie critics also raved about films like Titanic, Forrest Gump, etc.

edit: Boris, it is far better to use a movie now considered a classic that was panned by critics as a proof of Critics problems, not ones own movie tastes.

Has TRL come out in DVD? (TRL? Just like the crappy MTV show...)

I thought the battle scenes were generally well done, and the inner dialogue compelling. It had to do something right, so many good reviews and 7 Oscar nominations!

As in 2001 Space Odyssey? Doesn't go back that far... I wouldn't know . Though it seems some of the same charges levied against that movie (boring, etc.) are latched onto this one.

Maybe I just like epic films (I just picked up the 4 hour 'Dances with Wolves' Special Edition, even though many think it boring... I love it).

I think they know better than the average joe . I usually trust the critics opinions.... and when SUCH a majority of them agree then it does indicate that a very broad spectrum of people that are experts in movies like (or dislike) a certain film.

Oh, and Gump was good .

The imagery of the battles was heavy handed at besy, even if technicaly proficient. And I could never believe that anyone would have these long-winded, wondering philosophical innner dialogues in those conditions. Oh, and qas for the Academy awards, Kubric and Hitchcock never got any awards (except tribute ones) nor did Cary Grant.

yeah, but 2001 is an epic that stands the test of time, even if it is vague and slow at times and NOt for everyone: it's been 5 years and I think most people can;t remember TRL at all. It has rightfully been forgotten.

Why not? Don't you think people might think of bigger things in these conditions? In stressful situations you don't clense your mind of other philosophical questions relating to where you are.

Not in the style thse guys did, slow, and wordy. It might have worked better is the character had been introduced as a poet or such.

hmm, Kubrick for Strangelove, Clockworck Orange, perhaps Barry Lyndon. As for Hitchcock, we are talking best director, not best movie. The question is which directors making which movies.

My criteria for liking a movie is easy:

Entertain me, make me laugh, make me cry, make me oh and ah.

I don't care if a scene is "technically proficient" or "historically inaccurate".

I don't care if the movie doesn't have a message.

It's entertainment folks, that's all.

how can you not like the classic lines such as:

"no more boom boom for this girl", "how do you shoot women and children?; easy... you dont give them as much lead"... etc.
(and ofcourse the most popular phrase : "ooh me so horny". )
Im with tuberski. If it entertained you, it did its job. If it provoked you to think deeply about its nice too, but entertainment is whats most important.

A great war movie that I have seen is Henry V. Agincourt was interestingly portrayed.

Stalingrad, on the other hand, was a good movie! Are there any good Russian portrayals of the battle?

I don't remember a single modern Russian movie about Stalingrad battle. All movies about Stalingrad were made during Soviet times. Most of them were very good and very accurate in comparsion with 'enemy at the gates', but still it were for internal use. A heroic sagas about great struggle. I doubt any of them were ever translated to foreign languages.

I've always like Platoon. Born on the Fourth of July was also good- though that wasn't exactly a war movie. Honorable mentions to full metal jacket and saving private ryan.

I know this sounds cliched. But I have to go with Apocalypse Now. If it weren't for that movie, I wouldn't have even got into war movies.
