I've only heard great things about Selassie... about his abolition of slavery, his modernizing of the ethiopian legal system, his internationalism and pro-globalization stances, etc. all while being supported by the US. isn't he considered a great hero among africans? i know most people leaning towards black nationalism love him.

Mainly it's because he led the only independent Black African country during the age of colonialism. It has nothing to do with his actual rule, which was largely a disaster for Ethiopia.

is this true? I thought there was an independent west african country (thats not Liberia) but i can't remember which one it was...

I don't count Serra Leone and Liberia since they were virtual colonies, independent in name only. Liberia was basically a colony of the Firestone corporation, for example.
