Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

I don't know what you see, but I edited the original p (for heading) and t (text matter) of the above the above post.

Out of interest I was able to post this new thread's first post via my wife's labtop (the shame). I think it must be the browser settings are the problem.

You seem to have started 2 threads concerning turns 2121 thru 2130; soes that mean your browser is better now? Assuming the minimal content is not part of your problem, I was wondering what the distinction was supposed to be between "turn" and "discussion". One could assume that the "discussion" is for the obvious purpose, but what about the other?

Enter the AD-FREE zone

No I used my wifes computer to start the two threads.

I un-installed Netscape 4.76 and re-installed Netscape 4.8.

I tried IE but it too didn't help.

I seem to be able to post at 'poly but not at CGN which is interesting.

I am still searching the net for assistance.

A network error occurred while Netscape was receiving data. ( Network error. Connection reset by peer.

Also the last message was sent like this via the Post quick reply. When I tried the post reply button on the right, the error message above, popped up.

So what's difference: possible length of message? some other protocol?

Cap'n Herc's browser problems Get a bigger avatar today!

Cap'n Herc, I'm not generally a believer in blaming malevolent software for system problems, but given all you have done to address your posting problem, the Cuspidore thinks that your computer has been assimilated by the 'Borg - perhaps by one too many visits to Gambling, Porn, Warez, whatever sites - and its TCP/IP routines have been subverted to some evil mission, probably the least of which is your difficulties in posting. I suppose that you have some sort of AV going, but being kinda lax in that area myself, it would be easy to imagine that you may not be fully protected.

Assuming that the virus theory is not helpful, the Cuspidore's University slave advisor has a sequence of (increasingly unpleasant) possible remedies:

  • --Install / Re-Install the latest service pack for your operating system (in the hopes that whatever is wrong with your system was in a routine that happened to be modified in the SP);
  • --Uninstall the TCP/IP protocol in whatever connections it is present - in Win2k it would be:
    - - -Network/Dialup connections
    - - -Select each connection
    - - -Properties
    - - -Network Tab
    - - -Select TCP/IP
    - - -Uninstall Button
    Then, after they are all gone, Reinstall, hoping that you will be getting a fresh load of the SWare
  • --If you are using dialup, remove / reinstall those connections;
  • --Uninstall / ReInstall all the networking stuff via similar or whatever other means strike your fancy
  • --If you have an extra HD or a spare partition on your main one, make a fresh install of the OS there (creating a dual boot system) and install enough stuff to see if your posting problems are present in that installation, ruling out some unknown hardware type problem (or a very resourceful virus); if they are still present, you will most likely have stumped the band, but you might as well continue down the list. Assuming this works, you will now at least have a working browser and can consider your options from there (i.e. migrate your stuff to that partition or try to fix the original one);
  • --Check / Reinstall the OS System files - it should be one of the Repair a Damaged Installation Options - Try booting with the OS installation disk and going down that repair path (there may be other methods, depending on yor OS) - you may wish to create a "Repair" diskette first, especially if your system is not on the 1st partition of the 1st HD - this Check/Reinstall will not check or uninstall your regular software (although it might clear things in your profile like 'my documents', 'favorites', etc) but it wouldn't be a bad idea to check your backups now, and you will probably need to re-calibrate many of your personal settings and stuff later;
  • --Consider some of the more radical repair options, some of which may not be much different from starting over;
  • --In all of the above, you should probably reinstall the Service Pack afterwards;
  • --Poke thru the registry, looking for TCP/IP settings and mess around with any that seem promising. (Considering what the next option is, what do you have to lose?)
  • --Bye Bye Blackbird, Bye Bye :-(((
