Biased BBC? Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

This seems to have quietened down a bit, but a thought provoking letter I saw in the Times from an ex-RAF pilot deserves discussion here.

During the Second World War, the BBC wasn't asked to be neutral between Churchill and Hitler, and no-one could really have expected them to.

So why do people expect the BBC to be neutral between Tony Blair and the mass-murderer that is dictator Saddam Hussein?

The BBC only seems biased when they are compared to the ultra-right American media.

Having said that... everyone has a bias. But the BBC is a competent and reputable international news source that puts little or no spin on their stories. The people that don't like the truth hate the people that tell it.

I'm not defending the BBC's reporting.. it's quite obvious they have a centre-left bias.

Example..look at any story about Guatenamo Bay and you'll have barbed wire and the worst possible looking images possible present.

"I don't see how that is thought provoking."

The fact that people in this country consider someone like Hussein as an individual who should be treated with the same level of respect and neutrality by the media as a peacefully and democratically elected leader such as Blair.

BBC Television was shut down during WW2.

BBC radio reported very little news at all, and only war news sanctioned by the government. War correspondents were few, far between, and not selected for their tendency to make inconvenient critical analysis.

Most news came from newspapers and cinema newsreels. Not the BBC.

Read a history book, just for once, before you make an arse of yourself.

I take it all back, Spink. BBC TV news was actually broadcasting 24 hours a day during the WW2, featuring legions of war correspondents linked via satellite to the BBC's state of the art newsrooms.

That nasty David Attenborough must have been lying.

How dumb are you? You WANT your news organizations to start giving you biased reports on people you feel are not worthy of fair and unbiased media? You'll be the loser once you realize your not the one in charge of deciding who doesn't deserve fair coverage.

Respect for one's enemies is VITAL Bodds. You start dehumanizing the opposition, make them look like animals, you start to look like a propaganda machine.

I don't LIKE Saddam. But he's a devious, slippery customer, and pretending he isn't will not make catching him any easier. Quite apart from the reputation hit to the Beeb.

What's the alternative Bodds? Give us some alternatives... and do tell us how the BNP media contacts aren't just a little bit biased towards the right.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

BBC is crap when it comes to any coverage of the U.S. For instance, they did a story recently on the Pentagon's report about what happened to the maintenance company that got shot up at Nassiriya. Well they said that was what the story was about, but they didn't cover that story. Instead they simply opined once again that the U.S. government lied about what happened to Jessica Lynch. They didn't add anything to the knowledge base (though the report did have a lot of new information in it). They simply stated again and without any evidence that the U.S. government was behind those stories about Lynch holding off the Iraqis (with two revolvers!) until she ran out of ammo. Who would be stupid enough to believe a story like that from an anonymous source?

Did the anonymous source work for the government? I don't know, and I doubt the BBC does either. They certainly aren't backing up their assertion with any evidence. The problem is that they seem to be making it without evidence as well. Here's a tip for the students that seem to staff the upper echelons of the BBC's news operation. If a guy with a name and a position in the U.S. government makes a statement on camera it is a very simple thing to prove. You may or may not believe what he has to say, but he will have to stand behind his words or suffer the sort of embarassment that BBC seems to be trying to put the Pentagon through if he is wrong, and especially when he lies. If, on the other hand, you meet a guy in a parking garage who makes a claim on the promise of strict anonymity, you are on your own. You can publish what he says or not, but you are now the agency that has to decide whether to make this information public, and it is incumbent on you to decide whether the story has merit.

I watch them for two reasons:

1) To see what sort of spin the Brits are getting

2) To see their coverage of Africa, which the U.S. news networks severely underreport.

BBC are biased everywhere. They seem to especially dislike Israel though (look at the last show they made-it throws away any attempt at objectiveness). Still, as long as you take out the spin, its just as good a news source as any other.
