quote: I didn't forget about Griese, but his confidence has to be shot. Sure you can win with defense, but remember Tampa ONLY won a championship when it was able to find a passing game. |
Correction, Imran: Tampa won and dominated games most of the time whenever it found a *running* game, not a passing game. If there's one thing Chucky is absolutely right about, it's that a team must run the ball well to have a functional offense. Oakland tried to win totally through the air in the Super Bowl and paid for it, big time. (Well, Callahan being dim enough not to change Gannon's audible codes helped, too.)
And I'm glad to finally see my Bucs get the respect they've deserved for years now. Even from you, Imran.
And on Kidd, he made the right call. With a healthy Mourning, the Nets have the leg up on the Pistons again and they should be able to consistently be a presence for the Finals for the next few years. Neither he nor his wife would have been happy in San Antonio, because there are too many good teams to compete with and Kidd would always have been second banana to Duncan.

Leafs sign Marchment
WebPosted Fri Jul 11 15:21:02 2003
CBC SPORTS ONLINE - The Toronto Maple Leafs have waded into the free-agent pool and come out with hard-hitting veteran defenceman Bryan Marchment.
The Leafs inked the unrestricted free agent to a one-year deal worth $2 million US.
"Since I got the phone call I've had butterflies in my stomach," Marchment said on a Friday conference call. "Growing up as young kid watching the Leafs I always dreamed of making the NHL.
"I've enjoyed everywhere I've played in the NHL but I'm real excited to put on a Leafs jersey."
The 34-year-old defenceman is expected to add a physical presence on the Toronto blue-line, something the club was looking for with the possible retirement of Robert Svehla and the loss of Glen Wesley.
Wesley signed a one-year, $2.75-million deal with the Carolina Hurricanes earlier this week.
Marchment had two goals, 12 assists and 141 penalty minutes with the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche last season.
He has 2,126 penalty minutes in 814 career games during stints with the Winnipeg Jets, Chicago Blackhawks, Hartford Whalers, Tampa Bay Lightning, the Avalanche and the Sharks.

Yet another reason to hate the Leafs...
They just make it too easy sometimes.

De Vries departs Avs for Rangers
WebPosted Mon Jul 14 19:49:55 2003
CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Defenceman Greg de Vries is Broadway-bound.
De Vries, a 30-year-old unrestricted free agent, signed Monday with the New York Rangers, concluding his five-year tenure with the Colorado Avalanche.
"I really enjoyed my time in Colorado," de Vries said. "Maybe I thought it would be time to get out on my own and try to take a little more pressure on myself."
De Vries inked a four-year contract worth $13 million US with the Rangers.
He pocketed $1.375 million US this past season.
"Greg de Vries has developed into a solid, steady, two-way defenceman and we are sure that his addition will help strengthen our defence significantly," Rangers general manager and head coach Glen Sather said.
De Vries will make $4.2 million US this coming season, $3.1 million US in 2004-05, $3 million US in 2005-06 and $2.7 million US in 2006-07.
And Sather, the ex-Edmonton Oilers GM who signed de Vries to his first NHL pact nine years ago, feels he's worth every penny.
"He's a strong skater and he's a strong character," Sather said. "He's a guy that's continually got better.
"He can play tough and he can play smart. He just filled in all the little niches we needed."
"He was the ideal guy for the situation we have," Sather continued. "He fit into our budget.
"He was the type of person that I was looking for."
De Vries registered career highs with 26 assists and 32 points in 82 games for Colorado last season.
"He will be a great asset to our hockey club," Sather said. "We need seven top defencemen in this game.
"What has happened, with Greg being there, it just eliminates one spot we're trying to fill."
De Vries has 30 goals and 99 points with 459 penalty minutes in 500 games since entering the NHL as an undrafted free agent on Mar. 20, 1994.
The native of Sundridge, Ont., has played for the Oilers, Nashville Predators and Avalanche during his nine-year NHL career.
De Vries played 115 games for Edmonton before being traded along with Drake Berehowsky and Eric Fichaud to Nashville for Jim Dowd and Mikhail Shtalenkov on Oct. 1, 1998.
After De Vries went pointless in six games, the Predators shipped him to Colorado for a second-round draft pick that October 24.
He won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2001.

Well, his career is over.
