Mountains aren't the way they should be. They have completely isolated some nations for thousands of years (Tibet), which doesn't happen in civ3. Ever. It annoys me that an infantry unit moves just as fast through snow capped mountains as he does through open plains. I am going to get PTW soon, and when I do I want to make this modification very simply. I know nothing of modding civ3.

I want to make it so that snow-capped mountains are a separate type of terrain (using the mountain with snow graphic), and I want it so a normal mountain doesn't ever have snow on it. I want the snow-capped mountain to be impassable and not have any resources on it. I also want it to appear at a realistic ratio and in chains mostly. There aren't any single 20,000+feet mountains rising out of flat lands. Is there a way for me to do this simply?

It does seem to be too easy to get over a mountain.

You do have to consider the time scales involved, altough I agree it should be somewhat more difficult.

PTW does give you the option in the editor to both play with the movement costs for terrains, and set specific terrain limits for specific units.

Can you make it so it takes two turns to get up a mountain?

Short answer: No

Long answer: Not complexly, either. It is completely impossible.

Snowy mountains are the same as mountains, except for the way the graphic is. If you had modified graphics (e.g., Snoopy's or Warpstorm's) they might not have snow. The following suggestions are with PTW.

I now play with mountains impassable. Period. No ifandorbuts.
Editor: Terrain tab
Mountains: Impassable; 2 shields (since mining is no longer allowed).

Natural Resources tab
I removed the following resources from mountains:
Iron; added to Forest
Saltpeter; added to Plains
Coal; added to Forest
Uranium; added to Hills & Plains
Gems; added to Hills
(You wouldn't want these resources to be all in the mountains and inaccessible).

Also, I made Gold worth 5 gold (since you won't be building roads there anymore).

I seem to remember being able to set specific units to be able to enter "impassable terrain". What I want to know is, what happens if you road impassable terrain?

SMAC is set so that if the movement cost for a given terrain is 2 and the unit has a move of one, there would only be a 50% chance of the unit entering the square per attempt, unless one of your units already occupied that square. I think that's a better model than what Civ III has now.

One thing that always seemed strange to me was that in the early game you tend to send your units travelling over mountains and hills. The longer view helps with exploration. But in real life, people tend to favor moving across flatter areas. Silly, eh?

Then you would have to make workers able to enter impassable terrain... That kind of defeats the purpose of impassable terrain, if you could just use workers for exploration early in the game, IMO.

I know I honored the Snowy Mountain graphics and I'm pretty sure that Sn00py did also.

Unfortunately, there is only one mountain terrain type. It accesses the 'snowy' part just by which graphics tile was chosen.

Could Firaxis change this? Sure, but I don't think that they will (they've got a lot happening in Conquests already).

You could, but I'd rather have my worker improving tiles at home. Not to metion what happens when the barbs start showing up.
