Can someon make this mod? Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Mountains aren't the way they should be. They have completely isolated some nations for thousands of years (Tibet), which doesn't happen in civ3. Ever. It annoys me that an infantry unit moves just as fast through snow capped mountains as he does through open plains. I am going to get PTW soon, and when I do I want to make this modification very simply. I know nothing of modding civ3.

I want to make it so that snow-capped mountains are a separate type of terrain (using the mountain with snow graphic), and I want it so a normal mountain doesn't ever have snow on it. I want the snow-capped mountain to be impassable and not have any resources on it. I also want it to appear at a realistic ratio and in chains mostly. There aren't any single 20,000+feet mountains rising out of flat lands. Is there a way for me to do this simply?

This can't be put in the game but if I had control of the game I'd make it so snow-capped mountains are impassable and regular mountains would take 2 turns to cross over. There'd be a mountain troops unit (don't know what it would be called) and it could go over mountains in one turn and got bonuses on any raised terrain.

We can't add terrains yet, but maybe we will be able to in Conquests.

A unit that goes over a mountain would probably be called an Alpine Trooper.

Put an end to popups!

Mountains, whether snow-covered or not, act the same way for gameplay purposes. One can set whether or not one wants wheeled units to be able to enter without roads, or not. But think of this: as soon as the Spanish build their conquistadores, those units will traipse right throught the mountains, 3 moves at a time! So in your game, Spain might vassalize Tibet...

How do all-terrain-as-roads units handle impassable terrain?

TESTED... results Enter the AD-FREE zone

I've edited this from one of my other posts, but you get the idea...

quote:
Extensive testing, but not completely, has shown some interesting factors,
Ignore Terrain Movement Costs, DOES NOT Ignore 'wheeled unit' requirements NOR 'Impassible'

Factors that I'd like to happen but DONT:
2. you cannot add terrains... yet (though Conquests looks to be adding 2 more, they may Not have editable 'add terrains' so dont hold your breath)
5. you cannot restrict units to given terrains, you have 3 restrictions only, TYPE A. all terrains TYPE B. Road terrains: note you must enter a roaded terrain FROM a roaded terrain, and TYPE C, IMPASSABLE by all units, no exceptions

You Could make the mountain scenario you want but you have to 'give up' an existing terrain to do so... I have been terrain Modding HEAPs in the last few weeks, and am finally starting to understand the engine. Especially conversting Civ2 maps to Civ3... hehe
as for the 'no mountains in Mid plains' Yeah thats a bummer, If Conquests allows for more terrains, then I'll make this for you, since its what I want to do as well..

I don't think civ3's mountains are that bad, real mountains aren't such an obstacle as you'd think, though it should be harder to build roads through them.
The best solution is to have thicker mountain ranges, so a unit will have to take 3 turns to pass a Range, if it has 3 layers of mountains.
You can stop mountains having roads built on them, in the terrain editor menu.. perhaps you could have a train or Mountain Guide unit that can carry units through mountains and ignores their movement cost( possible with PTW) - i'll have to try this.
It would be nice to be able to hide in mountains, have units not visible when hiding in mountain caves etc.

I think you can use the ignore movement cost to allow certain units through impaassable terrains, and units like wheeled units not go through it.

Soldiers can cross mountains easier than wheeled or tracked vehicles, horses are probably the best - thats why mule 'horses' are used to carry baggage up mountains.

Nope, sorry I have tested this and its not possible, The only effect this has is to ignore terrain movement point costs, Not any other effects like impassable and impassible by wheeled-unless roads.

I'm testing now if a pre-build map with a road on a mountain that is impassable, is now passable by units or units with wheeled....

Do you think it would be just as easy for an infantry unit to cross through the great plains as it would be to cross through the himalayas? Some mountains may be easy, but there are a lot of huge mountains that take extra time to get up.

The main problem is foot soldiers can go across a 27,000 foot mountain just as fast as going through plains.

Personally, I feel that moutains should have a huge movement cost to them, and make it impossible to build roads through them, but, only if the map generator allowed for "Mountain Passes" Terrain. i.e. points in a mountain range through which units can pass with mimimal cost, and through which roads can be built!!

Yours,

I worked out how to do it... Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

Make mountains have no 'trade' bonus, this restricts road building on it, as you've heard before, But you allow colonies and Workers are Not wheeled (or some unit that CAN taverse the mountain & build colonies). When the colony is built into the mountain sq, The mountain becomes passable, Colonies count as having roads under them... AND since it has a resource, the AI tries to take it from you... hence owning the mountain pass becomes a strategic goal for the AI....

That's an interesting idea Bane Star.

I want to still be bale to build roads through mountains, but upping the movement cost is a good idea.

This conept would be interesting to implement. Though, we really do need the ability to add new terrains, let's just hope the new editor will be very "robust".
