A revamped bombardment system (please read, need help modding game) Remove this text

The bombardment for units needs to be changed. First off, bombardment units aren't powerful enough. I want artillery to really be important, like as important as it really was (WW1 and WW2) All of the bombardment ratings should be raised. But to what? I need suggestions on that. Also, bomber should be able to have precision bombing. They did in WW2. They had bombsights and certain targets were targeted. This would make the airwar very important, as important as it really was in World War 2. Also, all types of artillery units would have defense (it would be very low though) so they could have hitpoints. In real life, the best way to take out artillery is from the air. But in civ3 you have to kill a bunch of units to get it. I'd mod it so artillery could be killed in bombardment. Is it possible to do this? I really hope it is.

So, how can I make my suggestions into the game to make it more fun and more realistic?

Yes there was precision bombing in WWII, for example the dambusters raid by RAF Lancasters and the precision raid against the Amiens gestapo prison by RAF mosquitos.

But these are rare examples and there are many more where precision bombing was completely unobtainable for example the attempted bombing of the U-boat pens in Bergen which accomplished nothing but the destruction of civilian property and lives.

Most of the time the bombing strategy was more like carpet bombing.

I agree that artillery should be vulnerable to air attack and with the way the games works currently the only way to do that is to give them hit points. Perhaps they should have 1 hp. You would have to switch on lethal bombardment.

'Precision' Bombing in WW2 had CEPs typically in the 1000 foot range. For the most part they relied on numbers of bombs rather than precision.

Oh, CEP = Circle Error Probable. This is a 'circle' (actually it is usually an ellipse) where half of the bombs will fall in. By definition half of the bombs fall outside of this.

Got spare money?

I think artillery (the unit) is powerfull enough - you just need to have the right number for the job you are using them for. However, I am not sure if the catapult or cannon are...I never build them because they seem rather ineffective.

Giving artillery hitpoints has already been tried. If stacked with another combat unit, their 1-defense artillery is still not going to be targeted until stronger (defense x hitpoints) units have been removed, because the strongest is always hit first. You cannot change that.

Giving artillery defense strengths means that a stack of 6 artillery is going to take 6 attacks to clear it out. If you are playing single-player, ... the AI never builds artillery to be stacked anyway. The only way they will use artillery offensively is if they CAPTURE it, but if artillery defends, they will not be captured.

Put an end to popups!

Every daytime air mission flown in World War 2 that I know of had a target. It wasn't like in it is in civ3. They didn't say, "Just bomb the city and hope we hit one of the good buildings." The night time raids were different considering the technology of the time.

Should I switch it on lethal bombardment?

I think you have to use too many to get a job done, not like how it really was.
