Is this a fairly accurate translation?

Era como si se hallara en una inmensa caverna cuyos muros y techo estaban formados

But you should change:
"masses of variable colours and darks" for:
"masses of dark variable colours" I think

"that on occasions, he was torn to step to the brightness of the moon."
"that on occasions would torn apart to... " Sorry, not sure about this one but it´s still talking about the "walls and roof" not about him

Note: he isn´t in a cavern really, he feels like he is inside one.

Reultaba dificil de creer que aquellos muros no fueran otra cosa que nubes apretadas sobre las monatanas y el oceano, a pesar de que el claro de luna recortaba sus perfiles,
