	Minority Report - Prejudices Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

I found this whilst browsing, seemed kind of interesting.

The most frequently cited groups are travellers/gypsies (35%), refugees and asylum seekers (34%), people from a different ethnic group (18%) and gay or lesbian people (17%). Prejudice against one group tends to go hand in hand with prejudice against others. People who are prejudiced against any ethnic group are twice as likely as the population as a whole to be prejudiced against gay and lesbian people. They are four times as likely to be prejudiced against disabled people. Knowing someone who is gay or lesbian reduces by half the likelihood of being prejudiced against gay or lesbian people as a group. Similarly, knowing someone from a different ethnic group reduces by half the likelihood of being prejudiced against people from different ethnic groups.

It's a couple of years old now, but it has some interesting points. And why are people so prejudiced against gypsies? Weren't more gypsies than Jews killed in the holocaust?

There are a few tenths of thousand here, and still coming from Roumania. They are the source of difficulties, because not all small town can accomodate conveniently several tenths of caravans, although the city council has the obligation to equip a piece of land for them.

Never mind the fact that immigration has saved this country in the 60s, or that everyone on these isles is an immigrant...

We had some gypsies come to Eastbourne a coupla years back and everyone jumped all over them. Judging from the local papers you'd thought a Baby Killing Cult had arrived.

Also, over here people seem to have forgotten the meaning of 'asylum seeker' - it is someone fleeing a ountry in fear of their lives. I'd like to watch one of the hate-spewing journalists tell a family to return to a place they'll be killed.

I think perhaps a distinction needs to be drawn between the Romany people (a distinct ethnic group) and travellers. Obviously, many travellers are Romany, but far from all, and as such it's rather like classing bungalow owners as an ethnic group.

and (as you well know) the porblem most people with asylum seekers is that most 'asylum seekers' who come over here aren't really fleeing oppression or are in genuine fear of their lives, they're here to take advantage of our country knowing full well there's almost no chance of them being kicked out, no matter how unfounded their claim. they are the people who most have a problem with, not least because they give genuine asylum seekers a bad name.

Exactly.

And the only people that make it to our shores are the rich, who can afford to pay bribes to people smugglers.

So the rich get better (by moving here) and the poor are worse off (forced to stay).

It's not our place to help anyway - we are not forced by UN conventions to open our houses to people who are in trouble and feed them, so why should we do it to people who have paid thousands to get here.

Last I checked, we don't have any borders with a persecuted people.

We can help so many more people by delivering the help in their host country, for example through military means by removing the dictators who are persecuting them.

Besides, half the problem related to immigrants is becaused they are barred from being productive members of society...they are not allowed to work...so what else do you expect them to do? They hang around killing time...hell, at least they aren't causing the same trouble as bored youths do. There is no reason why they cannot be allowed to be productive members of society, especially if they already possess a strong background of skills and education. Yet because they don't work, and aren't allowed to, they are resented. Methinks that they are deliberately being made scapegoats for political expediency...

Not relevent...I would expect any asylum seeker would be living in fear of the state anyway so wouldn't take the risk or would face immediate deportation anyway. Capiche?
